Global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has announced a significant leadership change as it reinforces its commitment to the Johannesburg market and the broader African continent. Partner Martin Kavanagh has been appointed as the new Africa chair, while partners Jean Meijer and Paul Morton will serve as co-heads of the firm’s Africa group.

This new leadership structure aims to integrate HSF’s offices in Johannesburg, London, and Paris—key hubs supporting its Africa practice. The firm has a longstanding presence across all 54 African countries and intends to leverage its global expertise more effectively under the new team. Kavanagh, Meijer, and Morton succeed former Africa chair Peter Leon and co-head Nina Bowyer, both of whom will continue as vital members of the Africa practice.

Kavanagh emphasized the firm’s dedication to Johannesburg, stating, “Our office, opened in 2015, has grown to over 40 lawyers, including nine partners, and is central to our Africa strategy.” He brings 14 years of experience at HSF, specializing in energy and infrastructure finance, and has worked with a diverse range of clients, including governments and multilateral agencies.

Meijer, managing partner of the Johannesburg office, has over three decades of experience in the African market, focusing on competition law for clients in various industries, including mining and technology. Morton, based in Paris, has spent over two decades handling Africa-related matters, emphasizing the continent’s role in the energy transition and critical minerals investment.

Kavanagh noted the legal complexities in Africa but highlighted the opportunities for rewarding business ventures. HSF boasts a 40-year track record of advising on African matters, with notable case highlights including a significant project in Malawi and the 2022 sale of Guinness Cameroon for ÂŁ389 million.

This announcement comes as a refreshing commitment to the Johannesburg market, especially following recent news of other firms closing their local offices.
