President Yoweri Museveni, in a speech delivered by Tourism Minister Col Tom Butime at the World Tourism Day celebrations in Kasese, emphasized the critical role of tourism in promoting peace and unity in Uganda. The President highlighted how tourism fosters socio-economic transformation and builds harmony in regions recovering from conflict.

Under the theme “Tourism and Peace,” Museveni noted that tourism brings people from diverse backgrounds together, fostering understanding, respect, and dialogue even in areas with political differences or unrest. He stressed that tourism’s role is vital in rebuilding regions like Kasese, which has faced past insurgencies, as it drives growth and creates an environment where people can thrive.

The President also discussed Uganda’s plans to enhance tourism infrastructure and integrate tourism into national development strategies, aiming to increase the country’s GDP and tourism earnings significantly by 2040. He called for greater private sector involvement and research to address challenges like human-wildlife conflict and further diversify Uganda’s tourism offerings.

Museveni reiterated the government’s commitment to using tourism as a tool for peace, economic growth, and social transformation.
