Police in Kakumiro have arrested 115 suspected criminals in a major operation targeting crime in the district. The suspects, including 101 men and 14 women, were apprehended during a surprise joint operation by the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF), police, and other security agencies. The operation took place on Tuesday across various locations, including Igayaza Town Council and Kikwaya Trading Center in Kikwaya Sub County.
Some of the suspects were found in possession of knives and pangas, while others were caught in unfinished buildings, smoking marijuana in groups. The operation followed growing public concern over frequent raids and criminal activities, particularly targeting local businesses.
Julius Hakiza, the police spokesperson for the Albertine region, confirmed that the suspects are being thoroughly screened before facing charges in court.
This operation brings the total number of suspected criminals arrested in the district to 179 in just two days. On Monday, 64 individuals, including 45 men and 19 women, were arrested in a similar joint operation in Mwintazige Town Council.
