Following a recent meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Uganda’s army chief, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a stern warning to Sudan’s warring factions amid the ongoing conflict in the country. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been locked in a deadly battle for over two years, resulting in widespread displacement and the loss of thousands of lives, both civilian and military.

Gen. Kainerugaba, who is also a prominent figure in Uganda’s political landscape, described his meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Addis Ababa as highly insightful, praising the Ethiopian leader as one of the most “brilliant and bold” figures in Africa. He expressed gratitude for the discussions, which he referred to as “informative and enriching.”

On social media, Kainerugaba extended his concerns to the conflicts in both Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, suggesting that foreign mercenaries in Congo and the violence in Sudan must be stopped. He warned that the bloodshed in Sudan would soon end and threatened those in Khartoum with the realities of war, emphasizing that they would learn if they did not understand it already. His comments indicate his continued influence in Uganda’s military and political spheres, and he is widely speculated to be a potential successor to his father, President Yoweri Museveni.

This comes on the heels of the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on senior officials from both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Among those sanctioned are senior SAF leaders, including Lt. General Mohamed Ali Sabir, as well as RSF figures such as Major General Osman Mohamed and West Darfur Governor Tijan Karshom. The sanctions target individuals implicated in the conflict that has left Sudan in turmoil.
