Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, and leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has revealed plans to run for Uganda’s presidency in the 2026 elections, contingent on his party’s endorsement.

Speaking from his home in Magere, Wakiso district, Kyagulanyi expressed readiness to challenge President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni or any candidate from the ruling party. His announcement sets the stage for another intense election cycle following his spirited 2021 presidential campaign.

During a media briefing, Kyagulanyi addressed pressing national issues and emphasized his commitment to representing Ugandans seeking change. He declared, “I am ready to challenge Museveni or any candidate his party fields.”

NUP’s Unity Amid Challenges

Addressing concerns about reported divisions within NUP, Kyagulanyi dismissed claims of factions, asserting that the party remains united. “There are no factions in NUP—none at all,” he clarified, accusing the regime of using former members to create a false narrative of disunity.

Kyagulanyi acknowledged the regime’s tactics to sow division but reiterated NUP’s resolve to remain focused on its mission. “Unity is our strength, and we will not be derailed by those trying to divide us,” he affirmed.

Response to Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s Remarks

Kyagulanyi condemned recent remarks by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who suggested shutting down meetings critical of government officials. “Such reckless statements reflect a deeply dysfunctional system where some believe they are above the law,” he said, urging the government to uphold justice and accountability.

Commitment to Political Prisoners

Kyagulanyi also spoke about political prisoners, advising against pleading guilty to fabricated charges while acknowledging the harsh realities of prison life. He vowed to continue advocating for the release of those detained unjustly.

Opposition Unity and Coalition Prospects

On the possibility of forming an opposition coalition, Kyagulanyi expressed openness to working with others committed to ending dictatorship and restoring democracy. “We are ready to collaborate with anyone sharing our vision for a better Uganda,” he stated.

Call for Accountability

Kyagulanyi highlighted the importance of principles in politics, emphasizing NUP’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption. He left the door open for reconciliation with estranged members, provided they adhere to the party’s conditions, including returning misused public funds and apologizing to Ugandans.

The Road Ahead

With the Electoral Commission releasing the roadmap for the 2026 elections, Kyagulanyi’s declaration signals the start of another critical chapter in Uganda’s political journey. As the country gears up for the polls, all eyes will be on how the opposition navigates challenges and opportunities in their quest for change.
