Sudanese Refugees Lead Influx as Uganda Receives Over 100,000 Asylum Seekers in 2024

Uganda has received over 100,000 asylum seekers since January 2024, with Sudanese refugees fleeing brutal conflict making up the largest group. Sudanese arrivals account for 36% of new refugees this year.

Most Sudanese refugees are arriving at the Kiryandongo settlement in mid-Western Uganda, where 150-200 individuals are screened daily. The settlement is struggling with shortages of medical supplies, medicine, and health infrastructure, posing serious risks. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has called for urgent funding to meet the growing needs.

“Millions have fled Sudan, arriving traumatized and in dire need of assistance,” said Shashwat Saraf, IRC’s Regional Emergency Director for East Africa. He emphasized the need for more funding, with the Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan only 23% funded. “The violence in Sudan must end to stop this ongoing crisis.”
