Kasese District Local Council Chairman, Mr. Erifaz Muhindi, has pledged to engage the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) leadership regarding allegations that some officers are demanding illegal fees from Ugandan farmers working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Speaking at a community meeting in Kitolhu sub-county, Mr. Hosio Wahenyeghere, the Local Council Vice Chairperson, raised concerns about the fees being charged on food items transported from gardens in the DRC to Uganda, despite appreciating the forces’ role in cross-border security.

Mr. Muhindi, during the meeting held at St. Paul Kiraro Church of Uganda, committed to addressing the issue with security officials. He also urged local leaders to ensure government funds aimed at reducing poverty are distributed according to guidelines and warned against smuggling, which he said could undermine local revenue and public services.
