Summary:
- Kiteezi landfill survivors have rejected a government plan to build houses in Mukono, which they must repay through land deductions. They demand fair compensation instead of relocation, arguing they were not consulted and prefer to rebuild independently.
Survivors of the Kiteezi landfill collapse have voiced strong opposition to a new government plan offering housing in Ddundu, Mukono. The Office of the Prime Minister announced that over 600 houses will be constructed on KCCA land at a cost of Shs84 billion, with the beneficiaries expected to repay the costs through deductions from their Kiteezi land value.
State Minister for Housing, Persis Namuganza, stated that the project, to be executed by Bulwadda Estates Ltd, will provide three-bedroom houses for affected families. However, many survivors argue the decision was made without consulting them, leaving them frustrated and dissatisfied.
Gonzanga Nkondwe, one of the survivors, expressed anger, saying they were promised compensation, not loans for housing. “We reject this plan. The government should compensate us for our lost properties so we can decide where to relocate. If the landfill is removed, we can remain on our land,” he said.
David Musinguzi, who lost family members in the disaster, criticized the plan, calling it a burden on survivors. “How can we pay for houses when our businesses and livelihoods were destroyed? Compensation would allow us to rebuild our lives on our terms,” he said.
The affected residents are urging the government to prioritize direct engagement to understand their needs. They demand fair compensation instead of relocation to Mukono, insisting they should be given the freedom to rebuild independently.
The Kiteezi landfill disaster in August 2024 claimed 35 lives, displaced dozens, and destroyed homes and property. Survivors continue to wait for a resolution that acknowledges their losses and respects their preferences.
