MPs Urge Fast-Tracking of Border Demarcation to Tackle Karamoja Security Crisis

In a push to resolve the ongoing security challenges in the Karamoja region, MPs from the Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs have called for swift action on the joint border demarcation between Uganda and South Sudan.

The recommendation, presented during a plenary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa on 18 September 2024, was part of a broader report addressing the security situation in the districts of Moroto, Kaabong, and Abim.

Hon. Linos Ngompek, the committee’s deputy chairperson, emphasized that the unresolved border dispute is fueling instability in Karamoja. “This border conflict poses a serious threat to the region’s security,” Ngompek, the Kibanda North MP, said. He urged the government to expedite the border demarcation to protect Uganda’s territorial integrity.

The report also called for enhanced security measures, including the deployment of a UPDF brigade in Kaabong and the construction of more security roads. It highlighted the need for peaceful dialogues, youth empowerment, and improved water access to ease tensions over grazing land.

Responding to the report, Gen. Peter Elwelu, UPDF Representative in Parliament, assured MPs that Karamoja’s security remains a top priority. Despite UPDF efforts to stabilize the region, internal thefts and cross-border tensions persist.
