Uganda Government Rules Out Further Extension of Shs2 Trillion UgIFT Program

The government has confirmed there will be no further extension to the Uganda Inter-Governmental Fiscal Transfer (UgIFT) program, which is set to end on December 31, 2025. Funded by the World Bank with Shs2 trillion, UgIFT aims to boost service delivery in education, health, and water sectors across Uganda’s 146 districts.

Investment and Privatization Minister, Evelyn Anite, addressed West Nile leaders on Wednesday, warning that no additional funding will be available after the program’s conclusion. “Complete all projects by the end of this financial year; there will be no further extension,” she urged.

Anite also emphasized the need to prioritize road maintenance, revealing that Shs1 billion had been allocated to local governments for road networks for FY 2024/25 and FY 2025/26. She noted the government’s focus on addressing local government staffing challenges and wage distribution ahead of the implementation of the National Development Plan (NDP4), which targets a ten-fold economic growth by 2040.
