The Court of Appeal is set to hold its first-ever upcountry Civil Appeals and Applications session in Gulu. The session, scheduled from September 25 to September 27, 2024, will hear 22 civil appeals and applications.

Presiding over the session will be Justices Fredrick Martin Stephen Egonda-Ntende, Cheborion Barishaki, and Christopher Gashirabake. According to the cause list signed by the Court’s Registrar, Allen Rukundo Owembabazi, the majority of the cases—16 in total—are related to land claims.

Other matters include trespass, setting aside High Court orders, damages, general damages, stays of execution, interim measures, contract disputes, validation of appeals, stays of proceedings, and striking out notices of appeal.

This session marks the beginning of the Court of Appeal’s initiative to hold upcountry civil sessions in various parts of the country, with a session planned for Mbarara in the next quarter.

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will jointly host the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) from February 1 to 28, 2025. This tournament showcases talent from domestic leagues across the continent. The announcement was made by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during his recent visit to Kenya, where he emphasized the significance of CHAN for nurturing future AFCON champions.

Motsepe expressed confidence in the three nations, stating, “I have no doubt that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will host the best CHAN in the history of the competition,” citing the strong commitment from their governments.

With this expanded hosting, the finals will feature 19 teams, with qualifiers set to begin next month. This marks a significant milestone for the Kenyan FA, which lost hosting rights in 2018 due to readiness issues. However, President William Ruto has assured that key venues, including Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia, will be fully prepared.

Earlier this year, the Kenyan FA faced a potential suspension over government interference, but their recovery has positioned them to host major African tournaments once again.

The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has officially announced its squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers set to take place from October 20-30 in Kigali, Rwanda. The tournament offers a pivotal opportunity, with the top team earning the sole African spot for the 2025 World Cup in Malaysia.

Yusuf Nanga, head coach of the Uganda U19 team, expressed confidence in the squad’s preparations, emphasizing their readiness to compete. “The team has prepared very well, and we have had sufficient time to prepare the girls to become champions. We expect stiff competition from all the teams, but as long as we do what we have to do well,” he stated.

Captain Jimia Mohammad echoed Nanga’s sentiments, revealing the team’s determination to succeed after finishing fourth in the 2022 qualifiers in Botswana. “It is our wish that we qualify for the World Cup, and we shall work hard to make sure we achieve that,” she affirmed.

Uganda’s U19 team, which includes several players from the senior squad, will kick off their Group A campaign against Namibia on September 22, followed by matches against Kenya and the host nation on September 23 and 25, respectively. Group B features Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Malawi, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semifinals.

In a recent report from the Ministry of Finance, Uganda’s debt stock increased by 5% over the last fiscal year, reaching Shs 40.6 trillion as of June 2024. This marks a significant rise from Shs 34.5 trillion in June 2023.

The government’s resource mobilization plan contributed to a rise in domestic public debt from 13% to 18%. Notably, accumulated debt through treasury bills surged from Shs 4.9 trillion to Shs 6 trillion, while bond debt rose from Shs 29.6 trillion to Shs 34.6 trillion.

The report indicated that the issuance of domestic debt escalated to Shs 15.2 trillion, reflecting a 34% increase compared to the previous year. Of this, Shs 7.4 trillion came from treasury bills, and Shs 7.8 trillion from bonds. The Central Bank Rate decreased from 10% to 9.5% during the fiscal year, affecting the yield curve.

Currently, banks hold the largest share of government debt at 40%, followed by pension and provident funds at 30%. Additionally, domestic debt servicing costs rose by Shs 3.8 trillion, reaching Shs 15.885 trillion, driven by consistent growth in net domestic financing.

Earlier this year, the Ugandan government announced plans to borrow Shs 13 trillion ($3 billion) from both external and domestic markets to finance projects for 2024 and 2025, slightly exceeding initial borrowing targets.

Embraer is presenting its versatile C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft at the Africa Aerospace & Defence (AAD) expo, running from September 18 to 22, 2024, at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria.

As a crucial asset, the C-390 Millennium is engineered for a broad range of military and support missions, catering to the needs of armed forces and government agencies.

This strategic aircraft is capable of executing various military and civilian missions, including transport of freight, personnel, and vehicles for peacekeeping, special operations, humanitarian support, medical evacuations, search and rescue, maritime surveillance, firefighting, air-to-air refueling, and disaster management.

Recently, the C-390 was integrated with a roll-on/roll-off Intensive Care Unit for the Hungarian Air Force, enhancing its ability to support critical medical evacuations and humanitarian efforts.

Since its introduction to the Brazilian Air Force in 2019 and later to the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, the C-390 has demonstrated high operational efficiency and reliability. Its impressive performance and cost-effectiveness have led to its selection by several countries, including Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and South Korea.

Currently, the fleet has achieved over 14,000 flight hours, with a mission capability rate of 93% and completion rates exceeding 99%, showcasing remarkable productivity within its class.

On Wednesday night, Brighton emerged victorious against Wolves with a 3-2 scoreline, securing their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Brighton quickly asserted their dominance, taking a two-goal lead thanks to early goals from Carlos Baleba in the 14th minute and Simon Adingra in the 31st. For much of the first half, Wolves struggled to make an impact.

However, just before halftime, Wolves found a glimmer of hope when Goncalo Guedes scored from Matt Doherty’s cutback, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.

The second half saw Wolves come out with renewed vigor. A threatening cross from Nelson Semedo nearly found the back of the net, only for Jason Steele to make a crucial last-minute clearance that preserved Brighton’s lead.

Wolves continued to push for an equalizer, but Guedes squandered a key opportunity, shooting wide when one-on-one with Steele.

Brighton capitalized on Wolves’ missed chances when Ferdi Kadioglu scored from close range after Danny Welbeck’s shot was parried, extending their lead to 3-1.

Despite the setback, Wolves pressed on and were rewarded when Tommy Doyle took advantage of a defensive error to score off the underside of the crossbar, bringing the score to 3-2.

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ) has reopened its September session in Arusha, following a hiatus since May due to funding shortages. Judges resumed work on September 16, aiming to tackle a significant backlog of over 260 pending cases by October 11.

A court statement highlighted that financial challenges forced the cancellation of sessions in May and June 2024, exacerbating the case backlog. This session will address 25 matters, including 15 hearings and key applications.

Notable cases include Kenyan opposition leader Martha Karua’s challenge against the government, set for September 24. Karua alleges that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission illegally declared William Ruto president following the 2022 elections. Another significant matter involves a dispute between DR Congo and Rwanda concerning regional security, scheduled for September 26. The court will also consider a petition from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko regarding his 2020 impeachment.

Additionally, the EACJ faces a shortage of judges in the First Instance Division, necessitating appointments from Kenya, South Sudan, and Somalia. These vacancies are expected to be filled at the upcoming Summit of Heads of State in November 2024.

The highly anticipated seventh edition of the City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge was officially launched on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the City Tyres head office in Kampala’s Industrial Area.

Scheduled to take place from October 17 to 20 at Lugogo Indoor Arena, the tournament promises to be bigger and better than ever. Annet Nakamya, President of the Uganda Badminton Association, expressed her optimism for a successful event, praising the consistent support from the Mandela Group of Companies.

“We are confident this year’s tournament will surpass expectations. The continued backing from the Mandela Group has been invaluable in nurturing young talent and elevating our athletes to compete on larger stages,” Nakamya said.

Herbert Bashasha, Chief Marketing Officer of Mandela Group of Companies, echoed these sentiments, assuring full sponsorship and noting the group’s commitment to improving the event. “This is our seventh year sponsoring the tournament, and we are well-prepared for an even greater experience. The tournament will welcome competitors from across East Africa, including Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, DR Congo, Burundi, and South Sudan, all competing for top honors.

South Sudan’s government has announced a new push to secure funding and accelerate the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement. This follows the approval of a two-year extension to the transitional period by the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC).

Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, Cabinet Affairs Minister, emphasized that this extension will be the last, stating, “We will reset the timeframe and engage leadership for funding. This time, we will closely monitor the process to ensure successful implementation of pending tasks, especially security reforms.”

Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, representing the SPLM-IO, expressed gratitude to those who backed the extension and called for dialogue with dissenting voices to ensure unity and progress.

Meanwhile, South Sudan Council of Churches abstained from voting, citing concerns over the lack of progress in previous extensions. They have requested an urgent meeting with the Presidency for further discussions.

Arua Hill Soccer Club has made a crucial move by signing George Akena from Kaaro Karungi, as they prepare for the upcoming Big League season. Akena joins the Gulu City-based side on a two-year contract, adding strength to the club’s promotion ambitions.

After facing relegation from the Premier League last season, Arua Hill is focused on returning to Uganda’s top football division. Alongside Akena, the club has secured several other key players, including Simon Okot, Derrick Ocen, and Gerald Kirya, highlighting their intent to rebuild and dominate the league once again.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has expressed concern over the slow pace of judicial proceedings related to exam malpractice, which they believe undermines the implementation of newly revised laws designed to address this issue in schools.

Dan Odongo, UNEB’s Executive Director, highlighted the need for prompt resolution of malpractice cases, noting that many incidents from the 2022 and 2023 national exams remain unresolved.

Speaking at a seminar aimed at preparing school inspectors from districts, municipalities, and cities for the upcoming national exams in October, Odongo emphasized that examination malpractice continues to disrupt the education system. UNEB introduced new laws with stricter penalties, including large fines and long prison sentences for offenders, with the hope that these measures would help reduce malpractice, especially if culprits were swiftly brought to justice.

However, despite initial optimism, the law has not been as effective as anticipated. For instance, 21 malpractice cases from last year’s exams were filed in court, but most remain unresolved.

Odongo revealed that UNEB is working with the judiciary to accelerate the handling of malpractice cases in hopes of making a greater impact. Over the years, UNEB has repeatedly raised concerns about delayed court processes and has even suggested the creation of a special court to deal exclusively with exam malpractice cases. Last year, UNEB Chairperson Prof. Celestino Obua advocated for such a court, stating it would expedite case resolution and reduce the human and financial resources needed to manage these issues.

Frances Atima, a UNEB board member and Director of Education Standards at the Ministry of Education, acknowledged the challenges in speeding up case resolutions but noted the board has made progress by closing gaps in exam security. She identified the main issues as occurring during the distribution of exams from storage centers to schools and within the schools themselves. “The best way to tackle this problem is through prevention,” Atima said, emphasizing the need for people of integrity to oversee the distribution and invigilation processes.

Odongo confirmed that many of the exam leaks reported last year happened during distribution. He explained that some individuals tasked with handling exam papers, particularly for the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), had tampered with packages, photographed the papers, and leaked them to schools.

In 2022, Namasuba Parents Primary School headteacher Mbayo Mamba was arrested in Butambala District for attempting to illegally open a sealed PLE parcel. He was caught conspiring with an exam distributor and a driver transporting the papers. Last year, several headteachers and teachers in districts such as Kasanda and Kikuube were also arrested for sharing the PLE via social media.

To prevent further leaks, Odongo announced that going forward, only senior local government officials, like department heads, will be authorized to handle exam distribution. He explained that these officials are more accountable compared to junior staff or external individuals, such as boda boda riders, who were previously involved.

The Uganda National Under-20 team, the Hippos, commenced their preparations for the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers of the Total Energies 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The qualifiers will take place from October 6th to 20th, 2024, in Tanzania with the two finalists securing spots in next year’s AFCON U-20 tournament.

Currently based at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, the team is undergoing daily training sessions as they gear up for their upcoming matches. Uganda has been placed in Group B alongside South Sudan, Burundi, and Ethiopia.

The tournament schedule, released by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), showed that Uganda will open its campaign against Ethiopia, followed by matches against Burundi and South Sudan.

But, despite being the defending champions, having defeated South Sudan in last year’s final, the new head coach, Matia Lule, the team’s Head Coach, speaking after one of the training sessions, made it clear that the team’s primary focus is not on retaining the title but on qualifying for AFCON 2025.

The rules are clear; the two finalists qualify for AFCON. But Lule says they will take it step by step, starting with getting out of the group and then aiming to reach the final, which guarantees qualification for the continental tournament.

Lule expressed satisfaction with the players’ response during the first training sessions. He praised the high turnout and the healthy competition within the squad, with every player striving to secure a place on the final team that will travel for the qualifiers.

Uganda’s performance in the CECAFA U-20 AFCON qualifiers has been impressive, having won back-to-back titles in 2021 and 2023. The Hippos triumphed over Tanzania in the 2021 final and defeated South Sudan last year, solidifying their dominance in the region.

However, their success in the regional tournament has yet to translate to continental glory. The Hippos have reached the AFCON U-20 final twice in the last three years, but both times they fell short against Ghana.

First, they lost to Ghana in Mauritania in 2021 and later they suffered a second consecutive defeat against Ghana last year this time on Ghanaian soil in Accra.

The Ministry of Education has issued a nationwide alert to schools following confirmed Mpox cases in Uganda, urging immediate precautions to protect students and staff. Ismael Mulindwa, Director of Basic Education, called for heightened vigilance, especially in areas with reported cases, emphasizing lessons from previous health crises like COVID-19 and Ebola.

The outbreak, declared on July 24, 2024, began with two cases in Kasese. Since then, 11 confirmed cases have emerged, with no fatalities, and a suspected case in Nakasongola has raised concerns.

Schools are advised to implement preventive measures, similar to COVID-19 protocols, as national exams approach.

Kasese District Local Council Chairman, Mr. Erifaz Muhindi, has pledged to engage the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) leadership regarding allegations that some officers are demanding illegal fees from Ugandan farmers working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking at a community meeting in Kitolhu sub-county, Mr. Hosio Wahenyeghere, the Local Council Vice Chairperson, raised concerns about the fees being charged on food items transported from gardens in the DRC to Uganda, despite appreciating the forces’ role in cross-border security.

Mr. Muhindi, during the meeting held at St. Paul Kiraro Church of Uganda, committed to addressing the issue with security officials. He also urged local leaders to ensure government funds aimed at reducing poverty are distributed according to guidelines and warned against smuggling, which he said could undermine local revenue and public services.

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has strongly refuted President Yoweri Museveni’s recent claims that NUP rigged more than a million votes in the 2021 general election. Museveni made these allegations while presiding over the final day of the Defence and Security Expo 2024 at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala on September 12, 2024.

“I now have all the evidence that in the last election, NUP cheated by one million votes. I have the facts. NUP can take me to court,” Museveni declared during the expo, which was held in honor of the late Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, the former Chief of Defence Forces.

Responding to these claims, Kyagulanyi addressed the media on September 16 at NUP’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule. He dismissed the allegations as baseless and called for an international audit of the 2021 election, supervised by the United Nations, daring Museveni to pursue his case in court.

“These statements by Gen. Museveni are utterly shameless, especially when made in honor of a distinguished figure like Gen. Aronda Nyakairima (RIP). My first instinct was to forgive him. But now, I challenge him to subject himself to an international audit,” Kyagulanyi said.

He also questioned Museveni’s actions regarding the Electoral Commission (EC), asking, “If he truly believes he was cheated out of a million votes, why does he still keep Justice Simon Byabakama as the EC chairperson? Why not fire him?”

Accompanied by senior NUP leaders and supporters, Kyagulanyi revealed that he had sent a letter to Museveni listing 22 charges against him. He challenged the president to relinquish his presidential immunity so they could face each other in court.

In the 2021 general election, Kyagulanyi lost to Museveni, who secured over six million votes (58.38%) compared to Kyagulanyi’s 3.6 million votes (35%).

NUP’s Response to the Formation of a New Political Party

During the same event, NUP leadership addressed the Electoral Commission’s decision to delay the registration of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) as a political party. The PFF is backed by allies of former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, particularly those who have distanced themselves from FDC over claims of irregular party financing during the 2021 elections, allegedly by the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

On September 4, 2024, the EC responded to an August 27 request from affiliates of the FDC breakaway, explaining that the proposed name, People’s Front for Freedom, was too similar to an already reserved name, People Power Front (PPF), potentially causing public confusion.

However, NUP Secretary-General Lewis Rubongoya made it clear that NUP was not connected to the reservation of the PPF name. “The slogan ‘People Power, Our Power’ was also reserved, and we have written to the EC requesting the immediate revocation of this reservation,” Rubongoya stated. He accused government loyalists of orchestrating such maneuvers to undermine the Opposition and warned that these actions risk tarnishing the EC’s impartiality.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, urged NUP leadership not to be distracted by what he called deliberate efforts by the government to undermine the party. “We are a formidable force by the grace of God, and that’s why they continue to attack us with propaganda. It’s a sign that we are growing. Let us remain focused,” Ssenyonyi encouraged the group.

Kagadi Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Benjamin Tumusiime has called on parents to ensure their children return to school without delay, following low student turnout despite schools reopening on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Tumusiime emphasized that academic activities now begin immediately on the first day of the term and dismissed the outdated belief that the first week is solely for cleaning. He urged parents to send children with all necessary supplies, warning that operations will be launched to arrest those who keep their children home for domestic chores.

Meanwhile, Kagadi Model Primary School headteacher Emmanuel Abigaba stressed the importance of the third term, noting that it is when learners sit for promotional exams. He expressed concern over the lack of urgency from some parents regarding this crucial academic period.

Clan heads in the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom have welcomed their inclusion in efforts to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis at the heart of the kingdom’s administration.

Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka recently emphasized that the resolution of the dispute between embattled Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaaga and Chief Prince (Okwir) Fred Mugenyi Rucunya over kingdom affairs lies with the clans.

Several clan leaders confirmed receiving invitations to attend a crucial meeting set for Saturday, September 21, 2024, aimed at finding a cultural solution to the deadlock. Francis Atugonza, head of the Ababyasi clan, expressed optimism that the gathering will yield a lasting resolution, noting that cultural matters are best solved within traditional structures.

Other clan leaders, including Nebba Byaruhanga of the Abakurungo clan and Johnson Kusiima Baingana of the Abasonde clan, echoed these sentiments. They stressed the critical role clans play in restoring stability in the kingdom and highlighted the growing concern among subjects about the ongoing leadership strife.

The conflict escalated when Chief Prince Rucunya swore in a new interim cabinet, a move denounced by Prime Minister Byakutaaga as illegal and without the authority of Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, the kingdom’s cultural leader. Byakutaaga insists his removal can only be sanctioned by the King, who has faced health challenges in recent years.

The meeting comes at a pivotal moment, with 21 registered clans expected to participate, though it remains unclear whether other clans will also attend. As tension mounts, all eyes are on the clan heads to steer the kingdom towards peace and unity.

Between 2022 and 2024, women have continued to face disproportionate vulnerabilities due to climate change, influenced by a combination of social, economic, and cultural factors  as reported by UNEP and  Intergovernmental panal on climate change(IPCC). As of 2024 ,70% of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty globally are women, and in urban areas, 40% of the poorest households are headed by women according to world bank .Despite contributing 50-80% of the world’s food, women own less than 10% of the land according to UN women report . In rural areas, they are heavily dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods, taking on the primary responsibility for securing water, energy, and food. Yet, they often lack control over environmental resources and have minimal say in decision-making, increasing their vulnerability to climate risks and they often lack the means and opportunities to adapt when climate change disrupts their livelihoods. This vulnerability is exacerbated by socio-cultural norms that restrict their mobility and  making it harder for women to respond effectively to climate challenges.

However, women are not just passive victims of climate change they are also powerful agents of change. For generations, women have cultivated skills in areas such as water management, food preservation, and disaster mitigation. Their local knowledge and experience, particularly in rural and indigenous communities, are invaluable assets in building resilience to climate change. By 2024, women continue to apply these skills, especially in rural regions where their expertise helps communities mitigate the impacts of climate change. In many parts of Africa elderly women are respected as keepers of traditional knowledge on early warning signs and disaster preparedness. This wisdom, passed down through generations, is crucial for building climate resilience in vulnerable communities.  By involving women in the development of adaptation strategies and ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making, we can create more effective and sustainable solutions to climate challenges.

To fully harness the potential of women in climate adaptation, it is crucial to address gender-specific needs and remove barriers to their participation. This includes integrating gender perspectives into national policies and ensuring that women have access to resources, education, and technology. Women should be actively involved in climate policy discussions at both local and national levels, with their needs reflected in funding and resource allocation for climate projects. By intergrating gender perspectives into climate policies ,supporting women’s leadership and recognizing their critical role in climate resilience as highlighted by UNFCCC(2923),we can create a more equitable and sustainable future for all .

Leaders in Kisoro district have jointly raised their voices requesting the parliamentary committee on East African affairs to study the volatile situations in Eastern Democratic republic of congo and push for the long-lasting solutions at the top level.

Their submissions were made on Wednesday 18th September as they hosted the committee in Kisoro district.

The committee of Esat African community affairs led by its chairperson Dr. Buturo James Nsaba, a member of parliament representing Bufumbira East made are on their oversight duties that started on 17th September and scheduled to end on 20th September as they visit Katuna, Bunagana, Kyanika and Mirama hills.

In their maiden interaction with district leaders, they depicted their consternation on the worrying situations in Eastern Democratic republic of congo as it is the biggest threat to the borderline communities.

The Kisoro Deputy RDC Robert Tukamuhebwa, District Internal security officer Sam Mwesigwa and the district secretary for social services who represented the district LCV chairperson all sought for intensive watch on the region’s volatility through East African community systems. Tukamuhebwa also beseeched for a common currency to ease transactions 

Responding to the leaders’ concerns, Lucy Akello, a member of parliament representing Amuru district on FDC ticket and a shadow minister for East African community in the parliament thanked the president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for bearing the great vision of uniting the entire region. 

“If all the regional leaders can emulate the president of Uganda, we can register success faster”, Akello said.

Subsequent to Akello’s comments was the committees’ vice chairperson Shatsi Musherure Kutesa, a member of parliament for Mawogola North who thanked district leaders for the wise thoughts about the region issues at hand. She however shown her optimism in listening to the local people’s concern in regard to the regional integration.

She guided leaders to ensure teaching of Kiswahili Language in local schools to ease communication amongst member states.

The team later on headed to Kyanika border and held a meeting with the Business community, Immigration officials, Uganda revenue authority, security officials and community leaders.

The Kyanika town council Mayor Sanyu Erasmus noted that there’s a registered improving working relations after the reopening of the border in 2022. Similarly, Mugisha Robert, a customs clearing agent revealed the bureaucratic tendencies involved in the business transaction in Rwanda that involves attainment of Export Licence from the ministry of trade in Uganda and again acquiring a certificate from National Agricultural export development board of Rwanda (NAEB) and go ahead to register for electronic billing machine (EBM) in Rwanda so as to be able to import from Rwanda.

Bestowing Mugisha’s remarks, quotas are also administered on some imports.

Conclusively the committee chairperson Dr. Buturo James Nsaba assured of changes as a result of integration and ensured mutual understandings between the partnering member states.

South Africa is making strides in advancing children’s rights, with President Cyril Ramaphosa signing a landmark law last Friday that mandates one year of pre-primary education for all children. In July, Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi called for a new treaty to solidify global commitments to free pre-primary and secondary education. With negotiations starting in 2025, South Africa’s leadership will be crucial to ensuring these rights become a reality for millions of children worldwide.

ATMs have significantly transformed the banking landscape in Uganda, offering round-the-clock access to essential services like cash withdrawals, deposits, and balance inquiries. Since their introduction in the early 2000s, ATMs have evolved beyond just dispensing cash. With digital advancements, banks have developed Recycler ATMs, enhancing convenience, functionality, and cost efficiency.

Recycler ATMs provide features such as instant cash withdrawals, balance checks, deposits, and bill payments for utilities like water, Yaka, and TV. While standard ATMs only dispense cash and occasionally accept deposits, Recycler ATMs take it a step further. They allow cash deposits that can be reused for withdrawals, reducing the need for frequent cash refills by banks.

Unlike traditional ATMs, which require separate cash replenishments, Recycler ATMs recycle deposited money for future transactions, making them a more sustainable and efficient option, especially in high-traffic areas. They also help reduce the reliance on bank staff, allowing customers to complete transactions quickly and independently.

One of the key advantages of Recycler ATMs is their reliability. Since customer deposits are used for withdrawals, the likelihood of these machines running out of cash is much lower, particularly in areas with high transaction volumes.

Recycler ATMs also offer enhanced privacy and security. Unlike in bank halls or agent banking settings, where others may witness your transactions, these machines provide a more discreet experience.

Joan Nakirijja, a businesswoman from Nakawa who banks with Housing Finance Bank, expresses her satisfaction with Recycler ATMs. She appreciates the convenience of avoiding long queues and traveling to the bank, and she encourages the bank to install more ATMs across the country. “I don’t have to wait in line at the bank with large sums of cash. This machine is a real time-saver,” says Nakirijja.

Ms. Bridget Nambi, a long-time customer of Housing Finance Bank, shares a similar sentiment. She recalls the days when she had to rush to the bank before it closed. With Recycler ATMs, she can now deposit money at any time, and it reflects instantly. This flexibility has been especially helpful in managing her business late at night.

The introduction of Recycler ATMs marks a major advancement in Uganda’s banking sector, providing greater convenience and efficiency for both banks and customers. As more of these machines are installed across the country, they represent a key step toward modernizing banking services to meet the growing demand for real-time digital transactions.

In Uganda, banks such as Housing Finance Bank, KCB Bank, Post Bank, and Stanbic Bank have strategically placed Recycler ATMs in locations like Kampala Road, Nakawa, Kireka, Entebbe, Mukono, Kololo, Arua, Lira, Tororo, and Fort Portal, offering customers greater accessibility to banking services.

President Museveni has held power since 1986, and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) has maintained a tight grip on power. However, this has also led to a lack of political diversity and a culture of patronage, where loyalty to the Museveni family is often prioritized over merit. It’s like a game of musical chairs, except instead of chairs, it’s government positions, and instead of music, it’s the sound of Museveni’s voice saying “I’m still in charge”.

So, what’s driving the Museveni family feud? Is it a desire for power, a need for validation, or something else entirely? As the battle for succession heats up, Ugandans are left wondering what this means for their country’s future. Will General Muhoozi emerge victorious, or will Rwabogo’s cunning and ambition prove too much for him? One thing is certain: the Museveni family feud is a soap opera worth watching – with more twists and turns than a Shakespearean drama. And if you thought Shakespeare was dramatic, wait until you see the Museveni family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

But what’s at stake here is more than just a family’s reputation – it’s the future of a nation. Uganda deserves better than a leadership that’s more focused on family dynamics than the welfare of its citizens. It’s time for the Museveni family to put aside their differences and remember that they’re all part of the same dysfunctional family. After all, as the great philosopher, Homer Simpson, once said: “family is like a bowl of spaghetti – it’s messy, but it’s still family”.

As the drama unfolds, it’s clear that the Museveni family feud is more than just a soap opera – it’s a cautionary tale of what happens when family interests trump national interests. Uganda needs a leader who will prioritize the country’s needs over family dynamics. The country’s future depends on it.

So, what can be done to break this cycle of family dynamics and patronage? One potential solution is to strengthen Uganda’s institutions and promote a more inclusive and diverse political landscape. This could involve reforms to the electoral system, increased support for opposition parties, and a greater emphasis on merit-based appointments. Additionally, Ugandans must demand more from their leaders and hold them accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, the Museveni family feud is a stark reminder that even the most powerful families can be brought down by their own dysfunction. As Uganda looks to the future, it’s clear that the country needs a leader who will put its interests above all else. So, let’s hope that the Museveni family can take a page from the playbook of other famous feuding families – like the Hatfields and McCoys – and finally put their differences aside. Or, at the very least, let’s hope they can agree on who gets to control the remote during family game night. After all, as the great philosopher, Michael Scott, once said: “Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy. Both. I want people to fear how much they love me.”

The UK government’s prestigious Chevening scholarship programme continues to offer fully funded one-year master’s degrees at leading UK universities, nurturing the next generation of global leaders. Now in its 41st year, the programme has produced over 300 Ugandan alumni who are actively contributing to positive changes in their communities. The Chevening Alumni Association, comprising 314 members, has spearheaded impactful initiatives across climate change, health, education, and disability support, among others.

Similarly, the Commonwealth Scholarships, awarded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), provide opportunities for aspiring change-makers to pursue postgraduate studies at UK universities. This year, the programme celebrates its 65th anniversary, having benefited over 1,735 Ugandans whose influence spans sectors from education to finance.

At a recent farewell event, outgoing scholars from both the Chevening and Commonwealth programmes were joined by alumni, officials from the Ministry of Education, and representatives from Prudential, which has partnered with Chevening for a second year. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni recently celebrated his 80th birthday, with the government organizing grand festivities to mark the occasion. Over the weekend, the President attended a church service in Nakaseke District, Central Uganda, where a lively atmosphere filled the venue.

Arriving at the parish grounds around 11:45 a.m., Museveni, accompanied by his family, was greeted by a crowd of dignitaries, local leaders, and residents who sang “happy birthday” to him. Unlike his typical official attire, the President wore a lime green shirt, which sparked conversation among attendees.

Notable figures in attendance included Vice President Jessica Alupo, Parliament Speaker Anita Among, former Prime Ministers Amama Mbabazi and Ruhakana Rugunda, NRM Vice Chairperson Moses Kigongo, First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, and several other ministers. Religious leaders from various denominations also took part, including the President’s daughter, Patience Rwabwogo, and leaders from the Anglican, Muslim, Seventh-Day Adventist, and Orthodox communities.

Prayers were a central part of the celebration, with Archbishop Anthony Zziwa of the Episcopal Conference leading the sermon, based on Psalm 90:10. He highlighted the significance of reaching 80 years as a blessing and commended Museveni for his accomplishments despite past challenges.

In his brief address, Museveni acknowledged the issues faced by the people of Luweero, such as poor road conditions. He assured them that his government had already taken steps to rehabilitate and construct roads, including the Matugga-Semuto-Kapeeka road. The President also spoke about the region’s land disputes, reminding residents of their rights under the Lands Act.

Touching on education, Museveni admitted ongoing challenges with the Universal Primary and Secondary Education systems but promised reforms to address these problems, emphasizing that parents should not have to pay additional fees in government schools.

Museveni concluded by cutting a birthday cake before hosting selected guests at Kawumu State Lodge in Luweero District. He also promised to return to the area to address more issues raised by the community.
