On October 9, 1962, Uganda gained its independence from British colonial rule in a historic ceremony at Kololo Grounds, where the Duke of Kent, representing Queen Elizabeth II, handed over power. As the Union Jack was lowered, the Ugandan flag of Black, Yellow, and Red was hoisted for the first time, symbolizing a new era of self-governance.

Last year’s celebrations were held in Kitgum District under the theme, “Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation: Taking Charge of Our Future as a Free Nation.” This year’s theme continues the call for unity and strength, with a focus on securing Uganda’s future.
