The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has secured a $118 million donation from the U.S. Government, channeled through USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance. This vital funding will help provide life-saving support to over one million displaced individuals across East Africa, including Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The number of displaced people in the region has more than doubled in the last four years, rising from 13.2 million in 2020 to 26.5 million in 2024. This surge is largely driven by ongoing conflicts, particularly the war in Sudan, and the devastating impact of extreme weather, such as the Horn of Africa drought from 2020 to 2023.

Laurent Bukera, WFP’s Regional Director for Eastern Africa, highlighted the critical nature of this funding: “People who have lost their homes and livelihoods represent a significant portion of those WFP aims to reach across Eastern Africa. This contribution from the U.S. is crucial in ensuring that we can continue supporting these vulnerable displaced populations, many of whom rely almost entirely on humanitarian aid for survival.”

Despite the increased demand, resources have not kept pace with the growing number of displaced people, leading WFP to make difficult decisions about how to allocate food assistance. As a result, none of the displaced populations in the region are receiving a full ration, which is equivalent to 2,100 kilocalories per day.

This generous U.S. funding will enable WFP to provide both cash transfers and in-kind food assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, internally displaced persons, and some food-insecure host communities. In Rwanda, the donation will prevent disruptions in WFP’s refugee operations, ensuring continued support for the most vulnerable through early 2025.

This decision contradicts the spirit of regional integration and cooperation, which is a cornerstone of the EAC, it hinders collaboration and knowledge sharing and violates EAC treaties and protocols including the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) that emphasises regional cooperation, this decision contradicts these commitments.

It also puts in jeopardy the ability of Ugandan lawyers to practice abroad as the inevitable retaliation will follow.
The decision signals a more protectionist approach, hindering market access for regional lawyers in Uganda and potentially affects crossborder business.
This decision creates uncertainty and inconsistency in the application of regional and international laws, making it challenging to navigate the regulatory landscape.

It undermines and violates the principle of non arbitrariness, which requires that administrative decisions be reasonable, proportionate, and not discriminatory.
It Undermines the African Bar Association’s (AfBA’s) goal of promoting regional and international cooperation amongst African countries as it restricts the free movement of professionals across Africa which potentially isolates Uganda from the regional processes and creates barriers to collaboration.

This decision undermines trust in regional institutions and the rule of law
The decision reveals double standards as some are allowed to practice while others are denied, and it highlights the lack of reciprocity in allowing lawyers from neighbouring countries to practice in Uganda despite Kenya’s openness to Ugandan lawyers. This, in essence, may strain relationships between the two countries. It is thus absurd and regrettable.

I applaud the Uganda Law Society (ULS), the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and the East Africa Law Society (EALS) for condemning this decision as it threatens the very essence of our Integration story as a region & continent.

As such the EAC should consider harmonising laws and regulations governing the legal profession ensuring mutual recognition of qualifications and licences by establishing a regional accreditation body to verify the qualifications and credentials of lawyers, facilitating their movement and practice across EAC member states.

EAC member states should engage in dialogue to reaffirm the commitment to regional integration, which will restore confidence in institutions.

As a practicing advocate in both countries, I stand in solidarity with Hon. Martha Karua SC and the legal profession, advocating for regional interest and the rule of law.

I urge the ULC to reconsider Hon. Martha Karua SC’s application and reverse its decision for the greater good.

Lions, iconic symbols of Africa’s wilderness, are facing a decline in numbers across the continent, particularly in West and East Africa. As part of efforts to address this, there have been significant financial investments to conserve lion populations, but these must be paired with effective monitoring strategies. Traditional methods for counting lions often yield unreliable data, especially in unsurveyed regions.

In an effort to improve data accuracy, a team of researchers investigated the potential of wildlife tourism rangers in Uganda for helping estimate lion populations. Tourism rangers, employed primarily to guide tourists, have a deep understanding of animal behavior, making them a valuable resource for locating and monitoring lions. In their study, the researchers compared the performance of wildlife rangers to infrared camera traps, a common method for tracking big cats.

The study took place in the Nile Delta region of Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area, which faces pressure from commercial oil extraction and poaching. Over a span of 76 days, wildlife rangers, using smartphones with tracking software, covered 2,939 kilometers, while infrared camera traps were placed in 32 locations across the same area. The rangers successfully detected 30 individual lions 102 times, generating a reliable population estimate. In contrast, the camera traps only provided two usable detections due to poor image quality.

The ranger-led approach proved not only more effective but also significantly cheaper. The cost of detecting lions through rangers was 50% lower than using camera traps, and each detection via camera traps was 100 times more expensive than one by a ranger.

This study highlights the value of rangers in lion conservation across Africa, not only for their knowledge of animal behavior but also for empowering them as active participants in conservation science. By involving rangers in regular monitoring, lion populations can be more accurately and sustainably tracked, especially in areas where lion numbers have significantly declined, such as Uganda. The current lion population in Uganda is estimated at only 291, far lower than other East African regions. This study demonstrates that by building local capacity and integrating rangers into conservation efforts, there is potential to improve both lion conservation and the livelihood of communities involved in monitoring.

The meeting focused on enhancing knowledge management in land programming and boosting youth involvement in land governance at local, national, and regional levels, in alignment with IGAD’s commitment to inclusive and participatory governance.

A major outcome of the meeting was the creation of a comprehensive database of youth-led organizations focused on land governance, which will be hosted on IGAD’s communication platforms. This database will facilitate a targeted digital media campaign over the next three months, sharing updates and promoting youth advocacy.

Using a Hackathon approach, the team also developed a content calendar for the upcoming Youth Conference in August. This strategic tool outlines communication channels, target audiences, content types, and key messages, helping to streamline efforts for the event.

Through this initiative, IGAD and youth will foster:

• Increased awareness of youth-led solutions on land governance through country-specific digital media engagement.
• Cross-regional networking and learning among youth working on land issues.
• A centralized platform for policies, research, and resources supporting youth-led land advocacy.
• An online repository of relevant policies, laws, and knowledge products.

During the closing session in Entebbe, Mr. Mubarak Mabuya, IGAD’s Chief of Staff, emphasized the significance of empowering youth in land governance. “Land is not just an asset, but the foundation of economic, cultural, and environmental resilience,” Mabuya remarked. He highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration to ensure youth play a key role in shaping sustainable land policies.

On behalf of Uganda’s government, Ms. Naome Kabanda, Director of Land Management at the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, praised the efforts of youth in advancing land governance and called for the continued translation of meeting outcomes into impactful actions.

The initiatives aim to engage various stakeholders, including IGAD’s Youth Steering Committee and member state ministries of land, to ensure youth empowerment in land governance across the region.

The farmers, speaking during a December 10th meeting with a Uganda Breweries team in Lira East, said the threshers have notably reduced post-harvest losses and minimized the time spent threshing.

Tom Ongom, an elder and co-founder of the Abur Lango Farmers Cooperative Society, emphasized the advantages of using threshers over the traditional manual method of hand-beating sorghum plants. He noted that the new equipment has saved time and alleviated physical strain, particularly for women who previously suffered from itching and back pain after long hours of threshing. “We are very grateful for Uganda Breweries’ support, as threshing was our biggest challenge. This year, farmers will earn more and produce more sorghum,” Ongom said.

He also highlighted Uganda Breweries’ consistent support in providing high-quality seeds, contributing to improved sorghum production. Ongom urged the company to focus on timely seed distribution and to promote commercial agriculture to further boost local incomes and reduce poverty.

In July, Uganda Breweries donated five threshers valued at Sh25 million, aimed at benefiting 1,000 smallholder farmers across the country. The initiative was designed to increase farming efficiency. Isaac Oret, the Cooperative Society Coordinator, added that manual threshing had caused back pain and fatigue, but the new threshers have eased the process of threshing and cleaning sorghum. He also expressed the need for a local aggregator to maintain close contact with the farmers.

Oret noted that the partnership with Uganda Breweries has secured a reliable market for sorghum, offering better prices compared to other crops like maize. “Sorghum now sells for at least Sh1,000 per kilogram, compared to maize at Sh650, which is a great improvement,” Oret said.

Sheila Sabune, Uganda Breweries’ Corporate Relations Director, explained that the donation of threshers is part of their broader strategy to ensure high-quality raw materials for their products. “We work closely with farmers to guarantee the quality of the grains we use in our brewing process. This initiative is just one of the ways we empower farmers and strengthen the value chain,” Sabune stated.

The threshers were donated after receiving feedback from farmers about the challenges of manually threshing sorghum, which previously took up to three days to process just a few bags. With the new equipment, the process has been streamlined, allowing farmers to thresh up to 10 bags per hour with ease, reducing the physical strain on the mainly female workforce.

This initiative is part of Uganda Breweries’ “Farm for Success” program, which invests Sh52 billion annually to support farmers. The program aims to improve agricultural practices, provide quality inputs, and support over 50,000 farmers in the company’s supply chain.

Julius Hakiza, the police spokesperson for the Albertine region, confirmed that the suspects are being thoroughly screened before facing charges in court.

The $10 billion megaproject aims to extract oil from Lake Albert, a natural border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which holds an estimated 6.5 billion barrels of crude oil, with about 1.4 billion barrels considered recoverable. However, the project has faced fierce opposition due to its potential environmental impact and the displacement of local communities.

Human rights organizations, including the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), CRED, and Lawyers Without Borders, have reported severe violations linked to the project, such as forced evictions, land rights abuses, and environmental degradation. These groups have highlighted ongoing human rights abuses, including sexual violence, harassment, and repression by Ugandan soldiers against local fishermen. A 100-page report documented widespread forced evictions and the exploitation of women, often by military personnel and company staff.

The NGOs also reported a “climate of fear” in the oil fields, with several deaths among local fishermen around Lake Albert. The project has led to the displacement of approximately 12,000 families near the pipeline route, and hundreds more around Lake Albert. The report noted that some forced evictions took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 769 people removed from their villages in 2020 under the threat of violence.

Despite the criticism, Uganda’s Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous and unfounded.” TotalEnergies, in a statement, expressed strong disagreement with the accusations, reiterating their commitment to respecting human rights and maintaining transparency in their operations.

The opposition to the project has intensified in recent years, with activists facing increasing repression. Human rights groups are calling for an end to the forced evictions and violations of international law, which they argue have been ignored in the pursuit of the country’s oil ambitions.

Joel Mukwaya, a biologist and graduate student at Makerere University, first discovered the immune-boosting benefits of propolis tea when it helped improve his grandmother’s appetite and immune system. Inspired by his family’s positive experiences, Mukwaya joined a project led by Deborah Ruth Amulen, which aims to commercialize propolis products in Uganda.

In 2019, Amulen and her team developed the country’s first propolis powder extraction facility. They created a four-step process to extract propolis powder, leading to the production of diverse products such as propolis-infused tea bags, ointments, toothpaste, and children’s sweets to prevent tooth decay.

Uganda has the potential to produce up to 870 tons of propolis annually, yet many local beekeepers focus only on honey and beeswax. By utilizing propolis, Uganda could generate an additional $1.3 to $3.5 million in revenue each year. However, challenges in commercialization, such as the high cost of extraction equipment and delays in securing intellectual property rights, have slowed progress.

Despite these obstacles, the team has made significant strides, including the development of affordable equipment tailored to low-income regions. They have also worked to secure trademarks and regulatory approvals for their products. With further funding and partnerships, Amulen envisions scaling this initiative across Africa, positioning propolis as a key natural solution in both the human and animal health markets.

Learners who do not possess Learner Identification Numbers – which are issued only to Ugandan nationals or officially registered foreign pupils – are unable to proceed with their exam registrations. This oversight not only threatens the academic futures of the pupils but also exposes schools to legal risks.

Currently, Uganda is home to approximately 50,000 foreign learners, though only around 14,000 are officially registered. The discrepancy is particularly severe in areas bordering Kenya, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where many pupils commute daily to attend Ugandan schools without proper documentation.

One of the schools with a high number of foreign pupils is Tororo Progressive Academy. Headteacher Jovan Awira Obel highlighted the challenges they face, noting that out of the school’s 921 learners, 100 are Kenyan nationals. These leaeners struggle with obtaining identification numbers and the expensive process of equating their academic qualifications. “This is not unique to our school; many others face similar challenges,” Obel added.

Ugandan immigration authorities have reiterated the importance of compliance with registration requirements to prevent disruptions to learners’ education and to uphold legal cross-border educational practices. Schools that are found to have enrolled unregistered learners are being urged to regularize their status to avoid any legal repercussions.

This trend of foreign leaeners coming to Uganda for education has been on the rise, with Uganda being ranked as one of the top destinations for immigrants in Africa. In the latest United Nations Migration Report 2024, Uganda was ranked third, ahead of Kenya, which was ranked seventh. This has further contributed to the influx of foreign learners seeking primary and secondary education in the country.

Authorities are calling for greater awareness among both schools and parents to ensure that all learners , foreign or local, are properly registered in accordance with Uganda’s education and immigration policies.

Residents also imposed an 8 pm curfew on the transportation of coffee and livestock and are organizing security teams for nightly patrols. Kitanda sub-county chairperson Joseph Kamuli expressed frustration over the police’s inability to control the escalating thefts and robberies. He emphasized that in many cases, offenders are released by police only to return and continue their crimes, leaving the community with little choice but to take action themselves.

Prominent coffee farmer Francis Ssebwana highlighted the damaging impact of these thefts, noting that criminals often destroy coffee trees to hide stolen beans, thus ruining the quality of coffee intended for export. The community hopes these severe measures will discourage further criminal activity.

However, Bukomansimbi’s deputy resident district commissioner, Fred Kalemba Pax, warned against mob justice, urging cooperation with security forces. He revealed that the district recently acquired a sniffer dog to aid in tracking down criminals. Kalemba called for community support in apprehending suspects while allowing the law to take its course, recalling how past cooperation had helped reduce crime in the area.

Ben Mbaziira, the secretary for defense at Mweena Village, shared that the local women, who rely on the lake for water, are particularly affected. “With the algae invasion, the water is no longer safe for drinking, cooking, or bathing. It has a foul smell and causes skin irritations,” he explained.

The algae bloom has also disrupted the operations of passenger and cargo boats at the landing site, as many young people who depend on loading and unloading boats are now avoiding contact with the water for fear of health complications, severely impacting their livelihoods.

In Wakiso District, Swydi Kayongo, the chairperson of the Kasenyi Landing Site, noted that the algae had also affected his area. Fishermen, particularly those catching Tilapia, have reported a significant decline in their catches. “Fishing is difficult due to the foul-smelling water. Sometimes, the waves help disperse the algae, and fishing resumes briefly, but it doesn’t last long before the algae returns,” he said.

Allan Mutagubya, a senior entomologist in Kalangala, attributed the algae bloom to increased pollution from human and industrial waste. “Poor waste management in Kalangala has fueled the growth of the green algae, which depletes oxygen and blocks sunlight, suffocating aquatic life. This is why fishermen often find dead fish floating on the surface,” he explained.

Rajab Semakula, the Kalangala District chairperson, said that efforts are underway to improve waste management and prevent oil palm farmers from encroaching on the lake’s buffer zones. “We are working with environmentalists and oil palm organizations to reduce further damage to the lake. We’re also implementing better waste disposal solutions on the islands to prevent both human and agricultural waste from reaching the water,” he said.

A 2019-2020 investigation by Nation Media Group, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, found that human activities are severely threatening Lake Victoria, with contamination making the fish unsafe for consumption. Samples were taken from key pollution hotspots across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, including Kampala, Jinja, and the Masese Landing Site.

Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake, supports the livelihoods of more than 40 million people, according to the World Bank.

Bank of Uganda is a paying entity. You get instructions to pay, and we pay as instructed,” Atingi-Ego explained.

While Atingi-Ego did not specify who issued the payment instructions, such directives typically come from the Ministry of Finance. He also made it clear that the ongoing investigations will determine how the fraud occurred, where it took place, and who was involved.

Fraudulent Transactions Uncovered

The fraud involved two separate transactions related to Uganda’s debt service payments. On September 12, 2024, a payment of USD 6.134 million that was intended for the World Bank was instead sent to Roadway Company Limited, a company that appeared to be a fraudster, via MUFG Bank in Japan. A second fraudulent payment occurred on September 28, 2024, when USD 8.596 million meant for the African Development Fund was diverted to MJS International in London.

Upon discovering the misdirected payments, the Bank of Uganda immediately launched internal investigations and reported the matter to relevant authorities, including the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), in order to recover the diverted funds.

Partial Recovery and Ongoing Efforts

The Deputy Governor revealed that, as of now, the Bank of Uganda has successfully recovered USD 8.205 million of the diverted funds. These funds, which had been sent to MJS International in London, have been credited back to Uganda’s government account.

“That was our key priority: to recover the funds. We instructed our correspondent bank, Citi Bank, and the banks where the fraudsters held accounts to freeze the funds,” Atingi-Ego said.

However, he noted that there has been no cooperation from MUFG Bank in Japan, which has hindered the recovery of the payment made to Roadway Company. Despite these challenges, BoU continues to work with domestic and international partners, including the Financial Intelligence Authority, to trace and recover the remaining funds.

BoU Denies Hacking Claims

In response to rumors suggesting that the Bank of Uganda’s IT systems were hacked, Atingi-Ego firmly denied the claims. He stated, “It is absolutely not correct that the BoU IT systems were hacked. Hacking involves unauthorized access to computer systems, and there is no evidence that this occurred in this case.”

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor confirmed that no BoU staff members have been implicated in the fraud.

Investigations Continue

The Bank of Uganda has also cooperated with the Office of the Auditor General, which is conducting independent investigations into the incident. BoU is hopeful that the ongoing inquiries will not only help recover the remaining funds but also shed light on the full extent of the fraudulent activities and identify those responsible.

As investigations progress, the Bank of Uganda remains focused on recovering the remaining USD 391,000 and ensuring that all funds are returned to the government’s coffers.

Ibrahim Ahumuza, a former mason who had recently joined NEC Works and Engineering Limited as a contractor at the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) pad station in Nyamasoga village, Kabaale Sub County, Hoima District, was knocked down by the grader on July 26, 2024. He had been working at the construction site for just a few months when the incident occurred.

Ahumuza was directing a vehicle at the pump station when the grader struck him from behind. He was initially taken to City Medicals in Hoima for treatment, but claims the company failed to pay for his care, abandoning him at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. Later, officials from EACOP reportedly took him back to City Medicals before referring him to Nakasero Hospital, where his condition was left unaddressed. He has since returned home to Kinina Village in Kitoba Sub County, where he remains in severe pain and unable to move.

Speaking from his sickbed, Ahumuza told a reporter that his condition is worsening, and he is desperately calling for help from the company and well-wishers to cover the treatment costs that will give him a chance to recover and return to work.

Florence Isingoma, Ibrahim’s mother, and Jackline Kayesu, his wife, described their life as increasingly difficult, with no support from the oil companies. They are now calling on the authorities and EACOP to step in and ensure Ibrahim receives the treatment he desperately needs.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Michael Kyakashari, the Deputy RDC for Hoima District, expressed concern over the lack of information surrounding the incident, noting that Ibrahim allegedly requested money rather than medical treatment, a claim the victim vehemently denies.

As of the time of publication, EACOP has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident or their involvement in the case. The family and the community are anxiously awaiting a response, hoping for assistance that will give Ibrahim a fighting chance at recovery.

Kagadi District Council has decided to shut down the Kagadi Community Hall after it was deemed unfit for use due to deteriorating conditions and a lack of proper sanitation facilities. The decision was announced by the District Speaker, Magezi Muwonge, on Tuesday, following concerns over the hall’s inadequate infrastructure.

The council’s recent meeting was relocated to the Muhorro Town Council offices, as the community hall no longer has functional toilet facilities. Previously, the hall did have restrooms, but they were demolished due to their dilapidated state. Speaker Muwonge confirmed that the council had made several requests to the Kagadi District Local Government for urgent renovations, including the installation of new toilets, but these appeals have gone unaddressed.

As a result, the council’s next scheduled meeting on December 20th will be held at an alternate subcounty location, unless the necessary repairs and upgrades are completed. The decision has sparked frustration among several councillors, who have blamed the Kagadi District Local Government, led by the executive committee, for failing to ensure basic sanitation at the facility.

Kagadi District LC5 Chairperson Ndibwami B. Yosia explained that the district is currently working with a budget from the previous financial year, which has limited capacity for immediate repairs. However, he reassured the council that plans to renovate the community hall, including the construction of new toilet facilities, are in progress and will be prioritised once funding is available.

Councillors have raised serious concerns about the health risks associated with the lack of adequate sanitation at the hall, with many stating they would prefer to meet at other venues rather than continue using a facility that fails to meet hygiene standards.

The Ministry of Education has officially released the 2025 school calendar, outlining key dates for primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the country. The mob, in an act of violence, attacked Drileba and the surveyor, killing the DHO and leaving the surveyor critically wounded. A week before the COP29 climate talks began in Azerbaijan, TotalEnergies unveiled a new public electric vehicle charging station in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, announcing plans to expand the network nationwide. The French oil giant framed this move as part of a larger effort to promote electric mobility and meet the rising demand for cleaner, more sustainable energy.

Shortly after, during the climate negotiations in Baku, TotalEnergies, in collaboration with the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), took approximately 40 local journalists on a three-day tour of its operations in Uganda’s Albertine region. The journalists were shown oil fields and environmental initiatives led by the multinational.

For many climate experts and activists, however, TotalEnergies’ actions seem like an attempt at “greenwashing,” timed to coincide with the global climate talks. Despite the company’s sustainability rhetoric, it remains the primary shareholder in the contentious East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). Environmental studies warn that the pipeline, stretching 1,443 km from Uganda to Tanzania’s coast, could cause significant ecological damage, displace over 100,000 people, and contribute an estimated 34 million metric tonnes of additional carbon emissions.

“TotalEnergies is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” says Ugandan activist Bob Barigye. “This carbon bomb has forced tens of thousands from their homes and continues to bring suffering to our communities.”

TotalEnergies is appealing this decision.

In an attempt to shift its narrative, TotalEnergies recently announced plans to acquire a 28.3% stake in Uganda’s Bujagali Hydropower Dam, a renewable energy project. Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné framed the acquisition as a move to support Africa’s energy transition.

TotalEnergies’ operations in Uganda are strongly supported by President Yoweri Museveni, who has called Uganda’s oil reserves “his oil.” The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has consistently dismissed calls for an independent environmental review of TotalEnergies’ projects. Meanwhile, the government has been accused of silencing climate activists through arrests and crackdowns. TotalEnergies has also partnered with the Ugandan government on environmental projects like the Running Out of Trees (ROOTS) initiative, which promotes tree planting.

At COP29, NEMA’s Executive Director, Barirega Akankwasah, defended the environmental assessments for the EACOP project, arguing that Uganda’s low current carbon emissions will improve in the long term as the country gradually shifts to renewable energy. He claimed that by 2060, Uganda’s carbon emissions would decrease after benefiting from fossil fuel revenues.

Critics, such as Fadhel Kaboub, President of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, warn that the country is heading into a “debt trap” due to its reliance on fossil fuels. “Uganda is borrowing heavily to support these oil projects,” Kaboub says, noting that TotalEnergies controls most of the profits from the venture, while Uganda owns only a small portion of the pipeline.

The role of fossil fuels in global climate negotiations remains contentious. COP29, like the previous conference in the UAE, is hosted by a nation whose economy is deeply tied to oil and gas exports. While previous climate talks have recognized the need to transition away from fossil fuels, progress has been slow, with some negotiators struggling to maintain momentum.

African climate activists continue to push for more decisive action, although some officials, like Turyahabwe Byempaka of the East African Community, label their calls as “Western propaganda” and accuse them of hindering development. In contrast, Shepherd Zvigadza, coordinator of Climate Action in South Africa, argues that the real propaganda comes from corporations like TotalEnergies, which are profiting from fossil fuel exploitation while undermining the global push for climate action.

Locally, a TotalEnergies employee, who wished to remain anonymous, hinted that the company plans to increase its engagement with the Ugandan media, including organizing a “joint media engagement party” later in the year.

Dr. Kizza Besigye, the prominent Ugandan opposition leader, will appear before the Makindye Court Martial today at 11 a.m., according to Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Brig. Felix Kulayigye.

Besigye, reportedly abducted from Nairobi, Kenya, last week, was forcibly returned to Uganda. Reliable sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirm that he has been held at Makindye military barracks in Kampala since Sunday.

His wife, Winnie Byanyima, has taken to social media, demanding his immediate release from military detention. “My husband is not a soldier. Why is he being held in a military jail?” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the abduction occurred during his visit to Nairobi for Hon. Martha Karua’s book launch.

Besigye’s sudden disappearance was first reported on Tuesday night after friends and family lost contact with him. He was last seen in Uganda on Saturday before travelling to Nairobi. A source disclosed that his phone and that of his travel companion were turned off shortly after confirming their arrival in Kenya.

The case has raised serious concerns over his safety and the legal basis for his military detention.
