Security forces remain stationed at the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom premises in Hoima City due to an ongoing leadership dispute between the Babiito clan and Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga. The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and anti-riot police were deployed on Saturday in anticipation of a clan leaders’ meeting aimed at resolving the conflict.

However, the meeting was halted after security personnel sealed off the Kingdom’s premises, following intelligence reports that certain individuals had been hired to instigate chaos. Julius Hakiza, spokesperson for the Albertine region police, stated that the deployment was a precautionary measure to prevent unrest.

Key figures, including Eng. Fred Mugenyi Rucunya, the Okwiri (Chief Prince) of the Babiito clan, were barred from attending the meeting, along with journalists. Due to the escalating tension, the meeting was rescheduled for October 19th to allow for better planning and approval from the clan leaders involved.

Despite the postponement, security forces continue to guard key areas of the Kingdom, including the entrances to the palace and chambers. Hakiza assured the public that the presence of security forces is solely to maintain order and will not interfere with Kingdom operations.

The leadership conflict has intensified over the past months, with the Babiito clan dismissing Byakutaga in September and appointing Dr. Baltazar Kyamanywa Kasirivu as interim Prime Minister. Byakutaga, supported by the Royal Commission, maintains that only the Omukama has the constitutional authority to make such appointments or dismissals, in line with Uganda’s Constitution and the Traditional and Cultural Institution Leaders Act of 2011.

Byakutaga has faced continued opposition from the Babiito clan, which has accused him of poor management during the Omukama’s illness, which has limited the monarch’s involvement in the Kingdom’s affairs. In response, regional religious leaders have stepped in, engaging in private talks with Kingdom officials in an effort to defuse the tensions and restore peace.

Tana River MP Danson Mungatana has submitted a censure motion to the Kenyan Senate, raising concerns about the public statements made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The motion, presented to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, calls for a review of Gachagua’s conduct, citing remarks that allegedly marginalized certain groups of Kenyans and increased ethnic tensions.

Mungatana’s motion outlines instances where Gachagua made controversial comments regarding employment opportunities in public service, resource distribution to devolved units, and statements encouraging defiance of lawful county government directives. According to the motion, Gachagua’s utterances have violated key constitutional principles, including Article 75, which outlines the ethical conduct of public officials, and Article 10(2), which emphasizes national values and governance principles.

The motion also comes after Gachagua’s recent suggestion that President William Ruto was connected to the Deputy President’s current political struggles. Gachagua warned that if Ruto fails to honor promises of not humiliating his deputy, it could erode public trust in the president’s leadership.

Gachagua, who is seen as a key leader from the Mt. Kenya region, has recently voiced concerns about the region being undervalued by Ruto’s administration. He cautioned that the people of Mt. Kenya do not tolerate betrayal, urging Ruto to respect their support.

The Senate is expected to discuss the censure motion, which could have significant implications for Gachagua’s future as Deputy President, as tensions continue to mount in Kenya’s political landscape.

A few days after Action Aid International released a report on public financing and its connection to the climate crisis, civil society organizations (CSOs) in Uganda urged the government to increase funding for agroecology and renewable energy as part of its environmental conservation strategy.

Xavier Ejoyi, Action Aid International Uganda’s Country Director, unveiled the report in Uganda. During a press briefing at Action Aid International Uganda’s offices on Monday, CSO representatives emphasized that the findings highlighted the urgent need to redirect public funds toward sustainable development initiatives.

“We urge the allocation of public finance to support industrial agriculture with a focus on people-centered climate solutions. This should include investments in agroecology, renewable energy, decentralized renewable energy systems for greater energy access, and gender-responsive agricultural training in agroecology and climate adaptation,” the representatives stated.

Ejoyi also called on wealthy nations to honor their commitment to providing grant-based climate finance to countries in the Global South, including Uganda. He pointed out that human activities, particularly the continued use of fossil fuels and industrial agriculture, are significant contributors to the climate crisis.

Throughout the previous week, Action Aid International Uganda engaged in several activities to raise awareness about climate change and the funding of fossil fuel initiatives.

Mercy Grace Munduru, Head of Programs and Fundraising at Action Aid International Uganda, reaffirmed their long-standing advocacy for policy reforms to address the climate crisis. She highlighted AAIU’s role in formulating Uganda’s first National Agroecology Strategy, which promotes sustainable farming to enhance food security and environmental conservation while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, AAIU, along with its partners, has been advocating for the Climate Change Act, which integrates financial strategies to ensure resources are allocated for effective climate action. AAIU continues to support clean energy technologies and agroecology at the grassroots level to build climate-resilient communities and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and industrial agriculture. They are also pushing for the swift implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund to address the irreversible impacts of climate change.

Eric Kizito, Program Manager for Agroecology & Sustainable Natural Resources at PELUM Uganda, praised the report’s timely release, especially as Ugandan farmers are encouraged to adopt agroecology practices for environmental conservation. He mentioned that Uganda is close to finalizing its Agroecology Strategy, making it the first country with such a strategy, and they plan to present it to Parliament for further action.

Report Overview

On September 18, 2024, Action Aid International launched the report titled “How Finance Fuels the Climate Crisis: Corporate Capture of Public Finance in the Global South.” The report investigates how public funds in the Global South are being funneled into industries that drive the climate crisis and harm communities.

Between 2016 and 2021, industrial agriculture in the Global South received an annual average of $238 billion in public subsidies, reaching $276.4 billion in 2021. The fossil fuel sector received an even higher average of $438.6 billion annually in subsidies from Global South countries over the same period, with subsidies rising to $495.3 billion in 2023.

On Sunday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres convened with heads of major Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) to enhance collaboration aimed at accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. This high-level dialogue included the Presidents and Vice Presidents of five leading MDBs, alongside the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The MDB leaders outlined their ongoing reforms designed to create a more effective and responsive system. Guterres emphasized the critical need for these reforms to unlock affordable long-term funding necessary to bridge the SDG financing gap.

Discussions focused on strengthening partnerships at the country level, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected regions, and leveraging private sector resources for sustainable investments. The MDBs also committed to working together for the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), scheduled for next year in Seville, Spain, where global leaders will assess financing progress for the SDGs.

Following the working meeting, Spain, Jamaica, and Canada co-hosted an open dialogue featuring MDB leaders, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, and high-level representatives from member states.

MDB leaders highlighted their collective efforts to enhance impact and scale, underscoring the vital role of concessional finance to assist the poorest communities. They shared updates on their joint initiatives, including a workplan released in April 2024 that aims to boost MDB financing capacity, address climate action, and improve development effectiveness.

The leaders also discussed the potential of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to significantly enhance funding for the SDGs, including initiatives like the G20 Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

These discussions unfolded during the Summit of the Future, a pivotal gathering of world leaders aimed at reinforcing multilateral cooperation to tackle pressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

Among those present at the high-level dialogue were:

• Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group
• Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank
• Ilan Goldfajn, President of the Inter-American Development Bank and Chair of the MDB Group

• Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
• Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General

This gathering represents a significant step towards fostering collaborative efforts that are essential for achieving sustainable development worldwide.

In Africa, renewable energy can offer tremendous benefits that go beyond replacing fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions.

Consider agriculture: Sub-Saharan Africa holds a quarter of the world’s arable land. Yet 37% of food produced there is lost after harvest, largely due to systemic issues like a lack of cold storage and poor transportation infrastructure, as well as hotter temperatures driven by climate change. This hurts farmers’ incomes and contributes to the region’s severe food shortages.

One company in Kenya is leveraging renewables to help stem these food losses. SokoFresh offers local farmers access to solar-powered, off-grid cold storage rooms to keep food fresh after it’s harvested. So far, over 12,500 smallholder farmers have tapped into this service, reducing their post-harvest losses to near zero and growing their incomes by 20% on average as a result.

This is just one example of “Productive Use of Renewable Energy,” or PURE — an innovative approach that aims to deploy renewable energy in rural communities where it can directly support their economic development. The goal is to spark a virtuous cycle, where access to renewable technology boosts local incomes and welfare while simultaneously spurring more demand for clean electricity.

But despite a huge potential market for PURE solutions, many have struggled to get off the ground. Development partners, such as international donors and development banks, have invested relatively little in PURE to date — meaning that most costs currently fall to end-users like equipment suppliers and smallholder farmers, who often can’t afford the technology.

More investment and innovative financing mechanisms will be essential to unlocking the full potential of renewable energy in sub-Saharan Africa. Local commercial banks, largely untapped in this arena so far, could play a key role in kickstarting the PURE industry and scaling up clean energy throughout the region.

The Promise and Challenge of PURE

The market for PURE, particularly in agriculture, is vast.

In sub-Saharan Africa alone, the potential market for solar-powered irrigation, cooling and agricultural processing is estimated at US$11.3 billion. Solar water pumps, a market-ready PURE technology, could serve over 130 million smallholder farmers across West, Central and East Africa. In the realms of cold storage and solar irrigation, there is a potential customer base of approximately 7.4 million and 5.2 million smallholder farmers, respectively, in the region.

Scaling PURE to these levels would have far-reaching benefits. One report estimated that, if solar water pumps were made affordable to smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, 7 million farmers could see agricultural yields increase by at least 30%. By replacing diesel water pumps, the region could avoid 197 million metric tonnes of CO2 emission, equivalent to taking over 46 million gas-powered cars off the road for one year. And farmers could save $50 billion in fuel costs.

The problem is that, since PURE operates at the appliance or equipment level, its growth depends on end-users being able to afford the technology. And most of them can’t. Currently, 90% of farmers in sub-Saharan Africa who could benefit from solar water pumps cannot afford them due to high upfront costs or limited access to financing. As a result, only about 6% of the potential market for PURE is financially viable right now.

At the same time, PURE solutions — and clean energy solutions in Africa more broadly — have received little outside investment. Africa attracts less than 3% of all global energy spending; in 2022, the continent’s energy sector received just under $30 billion in investment. By comparison, it’s estimated that maximizing the deployment and use of PURE technology throughout rural sub-Saharan Africa would require about $120 billion per year over the next 10 years.

Local Banks Are Uniquely Positioned to Help Scale Up PURE

PURE is a relatively new concept, especially for investors, and most finance to date has been on the supply side. Some banks have established renewable energy departments dedicated exclusively to financing manufacturers and distributors of renewable energy equipment. But lending to end-users of PURE technologies, especially smallholder farmers, is lagging.

Local commercial banks and microfinance institutions are well positioned to help fill this gap.

Local banks in sub-Saharan Africa hold billions of dollars in customer deposits and are already set up to provide loans directly to consumers. Rather than embedding PURE lending into their usual loan products, which some do now, banks could create customized options that are better tailored to PURE technologies and users, such as loans with flexible repayment periods, preferential interest rates and longer tenures. This would make repayment easier for users like smallholder farmers, who often see their incomes fluctuate due to varying crop yields and seasonal production cycles.

While such loans can be riskier for local banks, many could tap into funding and guarantees provided by international development banks to help de-risk PURE lending, potentially unlocking immense amounts of capital. For example, Greenmax Capital Group (a firm focused on promoting clean energy solutions in emerging markets) launched a guarantee program for PURE loans that would cover up to 100% of a bank’s losses if an individual customer defaults on repayment, up to a cap of 20% of the bank’s total loan portfolio. A survey of 16 local banks in sub-Saharan Africa showed that this program could enable $954 million in loans for clean energy access and PURE over a 5-year period.

Banks can also build partnerships with companies that sell PURE equipment. Most PURE distributors are small businesses that struggle with limited working capital, making them unable or reluctant to offer consumer financing due to the risk of loss. However, only a handful of distributors have been able to outsource consumer financing to third-party banks or suppliers. Banks can forge win-win partnerships with technology distributors, helping to expand their consumer bases through new financing programs while increasing the banks’ own access to project pipelines and gaining valuable market insights.

Finally, PURE offers an avenue for banks to meet their own green lending and sustainability targets. As banks increasingly recognize the risks that climate change poses to their bottom lines, many are taking steps to increase their green funding and reduce the emissions impacts of their financial portfolios. Scaling up PURE lending can help meet these targets, while also contributing to broader national and international climate goals.

But Banks Face Difficulties Financing PURE Solutions

Our research found that, while local banks in East Africa could play a critical role in kickstarting and scaling PURE, they face several unique barriers to doing so.

Local banks have limited staff capacity and may not be aware of the range of benefits and opportunities that PURE offers. Moreover, there is no standard taxonomy in East African local banks to categorize PURE as a distinct loan category. Instead, PURE loans are often bundled with other types of loans during credit assessments, disbursements and financial reporting, making it difficult to gauge supply and demand and get a clear understanding of the investment landscape.

Local banks face external challenges, too. Many PURE users — often individual farmers, small businesses or underserved communities — have low or no credit profiles, making it riskier to lend to them. Supply chain challenges, such as equipment installation, repair and maintenance, also compound the uncertainty of loan repayment and lead to higher credit risk.

Many local banks also lack funds for PURE lending in local currencies. Instead, they may receive funding from development banks for this purpose in hard currencies, such as the United States Dollar or Euro. Yet, banks collect repayments from small business owners and end-users in local currency, potentially causing debt obligations to balloon if the local currency depreciates or interest rates rise.

Ways to Unlock PURE Finance from Local Banks

Banks can take proactive steps, both independently and with external partners, to overcome the barriers to financing PURE projects.

• Aggregating more PURE demand by consolidating loans through consortium lending and bundling products. For example, Sun King (a solar equipment distributor) and Citi established a Special Purpose Vehicle which bundled and sold customers’ solar loans to commercial banks and Development Finance Institutions in six different countries, raising $130 million to support new off-grid solar lending in Kenya. This strategy can help lower transaction costs through economies of scale, mitigate credit risk, and develop bankable project pipelines by identifying demand hotspots.
• Conducting portfolio reviews to accurately categorize and classify green lending products. Establishing a distinct label for PURE-related projects will give banks a clearer picture of their PURE financing and help align these loans with their internal sustainable practices and banking goals.
• Implementing innovative collateralization to provide new avenues for securing loans. For example, PURE businesses have significant potential to generate revenue from the sale of carbon credits. By accepting carbon credits as collateral for loans, banks could help expand financing to more consumers.
• Tapping new funding sources. This can be achieved by partnering with other banks to expand PURE projects; raising funds from development partners and governments through “blended” finance mechanisms; and leveraging climate finance opportunities such as green bonds and climate funds. These steps will help enable banks to scale up their PURE lending and make it possible for more customers to afford PURE technologies.
• Collaborating with other stakeholders, including development partners and policymakers. Advocating for macro-level policy support, such as policies to facilitate foreign exchange, can assist banks in addressing country-specific challenges. Development partners, such as the World Bank or the International Financial Corporation (IFC), can play a role by scaling up their technical support to local banks and enhancing staff capacity to identify, appraise and monitor PURE financing opportunities.

Banks in Africa and other developing economies also need more external support at the global level. Developed nations must make good on their commitments to deliver affordable and accessible climate finance to developing nations. And development banks need to reassess their international finance to ensure it is inclusive and aligns with the specific needs of African countries and communities. For example, under the Green Climate Fund (which is the world’s largest climate fund), not many PURE-related projects have been approved for financing in East Africa — despite eligibility and presence of accredited entities to channel the financing.

African Heads of State could, through the African Development Bank, collectively advocate for these kinds of finance reforms via platforms such as the UN’s annual climate conferences (COPs).

Unleashing PURE’s Potential

PURE presents an enormous opportunity to extend energy access and improve livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa — especially among rural and lower-income communities that lack electricity or the means to afford it. And local banks have a significant role to play. By gradually institutionalizing PURE lending, forming strategic partnerships, diversifying funding sources, advocating for supportive policies and more, local banks can help unlock PURE’s transformative potential.

The family of Hamba Mary Coreen, a former Ericsson manager currently imprisoned, has reached out to Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to express their outrage over her alleged abduction by agents of I&M Bank. Coreen has reportedly been held at Luzira Prison for three months without trial.

On June 17, 2024, as Coreen was dropping her child off at school in Entebbe, she was forcibly taken by four masked men in a tinted vehicle. She was allegedly targeted over a claim that she owed UGX 125 million to I&M Bank—a bank she had never even heard of.

“I was dragged into the car without any chance to explain myself,” Coreen recounted during a visit from our reporter. “They mentioned something about the commercial court while they sped off to an unknown location.”

Coreen maintains that she had taken a salary loan of UGX 60 million from Orient Bank in 2017 and paid it off fully. However, she says she has faced threats from I&M Bank, claiming she owes them money.

In her letter to the Prime Minister, Coreen’s sister, Nawongha Winnie, urged for intervention, highlighting Coreen’s status as a single mother of two who urgently needs to defend herself in court.

“We implore you to help our sister receive the justice she deserves,” Nawongha wrote. “The abduction was ruthless, showing no regard for her children, who were left unattended for two days. This situation has caused significant trauma for the entire family.”

Winnie emphasized the severity of the allegations against Coreen, arguing that even if there were grounds for a claim against her, it should be treated as a civil matter, not a criminal one. She called attention to the misuse of power by I&M Bank and urged for a legal resolution.

“The government must uphold the rights of its citizens against such abuses,” she added, underscoring the importance of due process in financial disputes.

The family hopes that with the Prime Minister’s help, Coreen can soon be released to reunite with her children and clear her name in court.

I hope this letter finds you well. I want to thank you so very much for prioritizing the poor and voiceless in your leadership style. You’re uniquely gifted in your own right, Rt. Honourable. Your leadership style has brought the Government even closer to ordinary citizens. Thank you.

Rt.Hon, I am writing to bring to your attention a deeply concerning situation involving my sister Ms. Coreen Mary Hamba, a 43-year-old single mother of two, who was violently abducted on June 17, 2024 around 5:45am in Entebbe, as she dropped her child at school, Entebbe Education Centre, around 5:45am

On that fateful day, Coreen was violently forced into a waiting tinted drone car, parked outside the school gate by four unidentified mean-looking men and driven at breakneck speed from Entebbe to Kampala. After three months of searching for her in vain, it has since come to my attention that she is being held in Luzira women’s prison on allegations related to a shs60m salary loan she lawfully obtained from Orient Bank (now I&M Bank) and cleared before she left employment at Ericsson company, about 7 yrs ago.

Coreen contends that to the best of her recollection, she cleared the loan with Orient Bank and even closed her account with them officially with their guidance, but she was shocked when I&M Bank, which took over from Orient Bank abducted her claiming they were demanding shs 125m from her, yet she has never taken any loan from them, and it was her first time hearing that there exists a bank called I&M Bank.

But more important to note Rt. Honourable Prime Minister is the following:

1- Impunity by I&M Bank: For the argument’s sake, let’s even assume that Coreen owes I&M Bank. This becomes a civil matter, NOT criminal, because she didn’t break into the Bank. The Bank chose to use impunity by abducting my sister, passing her through court corridors in a bid to “cure” the illegalities already committed against her during the abduction, and without giving her a chance to defend herself, she was simply dropped before a waiting commercial registrar, and in few minutes, conveyed to Luzira prisons, where she has so far spent 3 months without facing any court or legal services. The use of drones and security personnel to settle suspected Bank-customer disputes is an abuse of court processes and the sanctity of what is supposed to be the temple of justice, which, if left to blossom unchallenged, then the very ideals and sacrifices for which our beloved president went to the bush to defend will be in vain. The Government you serve has put in place due processes on how disputes of such nature can be resolved by respecting the laws of the land. Maxim law on equity dictates thus; “He who comes to the temple of justice must come with clean hands”. I&M Bank is seeking justice by committing injustice through abductions.

2- Why do Banks target Salaried Companies staff for Loans With Insurance Policies? A salary loan has an Insurance policy and a guarantor, which is your employer/company. Every month your employer automatically deducts the Bank loan and Insurance fees. The reason they pay the Insurance is that in case the employee loses job and is unable to pay, the Insurance comes in. That’s the reason the employer and Insurance Company cut her salary. So before any arrest is done, a law-abiding Bank needs to first engage to get a clear status report.

On behalf of very traumatized and concerned family members, we request you to intervene in this matter so that Coreen may get justice. Our sister deserves an opportunity to defend herself in the courts of law. We kindly ask for your assistance in facilitating her release from Luzira prison so that she can find her two children, since she’s a single mother. The abductors didn’t even consider the plight of the child they saw her dropping at school. She stayed there uncollected for two days without help. Both children are traumatized by the incident. Your intervention could be pivotal in addressing the injustice being meted out to innocent citizens by Banks like I&M.

Jolly Mugisha, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Western Uganda, has passed away. Mugisha died this afternoon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after being in a coma for several weeks.

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, confirmed the news of her passing on social media, paying tribute to her legacy. “With great sadness, we announce the passing of Mama Jolly. She passed on this afternoon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Mama Jolly will always be remembered as a true Ugandan heroine. Rest in perfect peace, comrade Maama,” Kyagulanyi tweeted.

Jolly Mugisha was a prominent and influential figure in Uganda’s political landscape, especially in Western Uganda, where she was a key advocate for NUP’s vision of justice, equality, and freedom. Her dedication to the rights and welfare of Ugandans earned her widespread respect from peers and supporters alike. Her death marks a profound loss for the NUP and the nation, as she was a beacon of resilience and hope in Uganda’s political struggle for a better future.

Mugisha’s fearless advocacy for the marginalized and her commitment to inspiring a new generation of leaders have cemented her place as a trailblazer in Ugandan politics.

Kampala International University Teaching Hospital (KIU-THR), in partnership with the Association of Surgeons of Uganda and the Ministry of Health, is leading the Uganda National Free Surgical Camp. Running from September 21-27, the camp aims to tackle the shortage of specialized healthcare services in Uganda’s Western Region by providing free surgeries and medical care.

The camp covers various specialties, including general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology (with 150 cataract surgeries), neurosurgery, and gynecology. Thirteen health facilities, such as Mitooma Hospital, Kitagata Hospital, Ishaka Adventist Hospital, and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, are participating.

KIU-THR is also offering ICU care for post-surgical cases. With over 25 patients already prepped for surgery, the initiative is set to improve thousands of lives, boosting both health and productivity. This effort underscores KIU-THR’s leadership in addressing critical healthcare needs in Uganda.

MTN Uganda Foundation has donated a fully equipped computer lab worth UGX 65 million to St. Catherine Girls Secondary School in Kazo District. The contribution, part of MTN’s Digital Access Programme, includes ten computers, a year of free internet access, and backup power systems.

Andrew Tusubira, MTN Uganda’s regional commercial head for the Western region, highlighted that this donation aligns with MTN Uganda’s Ambition 2025 Strategy, which focuses on expanding digital access and empowering communities through technology. The initiative aims to enhance students’ digital skills and learning opportunities.

The European Union has announced a €10 million (UGX 41.4 billion) investment to strengthen Uganda’s tourism industry. The funding was revealed by Jan Sadek, the EU Ambassador to Uganda, during the 2024 Tourism Thematic Conference.

“We aim to increase local community participation and ensure they benefit from tourism, while also facilitating better access to finance for the private sector in the tourism industry,” said Ambassador Sadek.

The support is intended to enhance Uganda’s visibility as an attractive and sustainable destination for tourists from Europe and beyond. Sadek highlighted the critical link between tourism and peace, noting that tourism not only boosts the economy but also shapes Uganda’s global image.

Despite Uganda’s natural beauty, outdated perceptions—such as the legacy of Idi Amin—continue to hinder its tourism growth. Sadek urged the country to focus on rebranding, emphasizing the warmth and hospitality of its people as a key asset.

He pointed to examples from Rwanda and South Africa, which have successfully used their histories to promote peace tourism, suggesting Uganda could adopt a similar model. By fostering a narrative centered on safety, culture, and unity, Uganda could attract more international visitors.

The EU has been a longstanding supporter of Uganda’s tourism sector and has pledged further investments to increase the country’s visibility as a sustainable destination, encourage community involvement, and improve access to finance for businesses within the sector.

Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, met with Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odongo Jeje Abubakher, during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The two ministers discussed the progress of relations between Bahrain and Uganda across various sectors and explored ways to further strengthen their cooperation for mutual benefit.

They also exchanged views on key regional and global issues, including threats to international security, peace, and regional stability, the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and the humanitarian crisis. The meeting also focused on areas of coordination and collaboration within international forums.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Rowaiei, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On  August 10, 2024, a heavy downpour triggered a devastating landslide at the Kiteezi Landfill, burying homes, people, and livestock in the nearby community of Lusanja, Kiteezi more than 20 lives were lost in this disaster.This tragedy is a stark reminder of the consequences of neglect and the pressing need for a stronger safety culture in Uganda. While disasters can be unavoidable, the chaos at Kiteezi could have been prevented with proper planning and accountability.It is estimated that 1,500 tonnes of waste are brought to the Kiteezi Landfill daily. This staggering amount of waste not only worsens the environmental challenges in the area but also heightens the risks associated with inadequate waste management practices.

For years, the Kiteezi landfill has been recognized as a significant risk, yet little has been done to address this ticking time bomb. The area has been in deep red a clear warning that needed urgent action. Unfortunately, in our homes, workplaces, and government institutions, there is a glaring lack of a safety culture. From schools and churches to factories and markets, safety protocols are often overlooked, putting lives at risk.

A well-prepared emergency response plan can save lives and property, showcasing the strength of our leaders. Delays in response not only invite chaos but can also lead to solutions that create more danger than they alleviate. The Kiteezi disaster exemplifies how inadequate planning and political apathy can culminate in catastrophic outcomes.

The aftermath of the Kiteezi landfill disaster highlights the urgent need for political accountability in Uganda. Local authorities have known about the dangers of the landfill for years but failed to take action. Instead of addressing the issue, they have turned a blind eye, allowing the landfill to expand unchecked. This negligence has directly harmed vulnerable communities, particularly those living in poverty who have no choice but to reside near the landfill.

To prevent future tragedies, the government must prioritize safety and environmental management. This means enforcing waste management laws and investing in sustainable solutions. Communities living near Kiteezi deserve access to healthcare, clean water, and safe living conditions. Their voices must be heard, and their struggles must be addressed. The Kiteezi landfill crisis was a wake-up call for all of us. It is time for our leaders to act decisively and prioritize the safety and well-being of their constituents. Without real action, both the environment and the people of Uganda will continue to suffer. We can no longer afford to ignore the risks, it is time to demand accountability and change

Kira Municipality MP, Hon. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, has called on Ugandans to take a stand and demand their rights and leadership change. He voiced concerns about the concentration of power within one family, with President Museveni leading the country, his son in charge of the military, and his wife managing the Ministry of Education.

Ssemujju argued that meaningful change won’t be achieved through elections alone. He referenced examples from nations like Sudan and Egypt, stating, “Unless we, as Ugandans, rise to the challenge like these countries have, we will continue to face manipulated elections.”

He criticized Uganda’s electoral system, claiming it has never been free or fair, with the military playing a significant role in influencing outcomes. Reflecting on past elections, Ssemujju noted that the process is often undermined, leaving citizens doubtful of its credibility.

As the country approaches the next election cycle, he warned that Ugandans should brace for a difficult journey ahead. “Anyone expecting a free and fair election must understand we are heading into a battle,” Ssemujju said, encouraging the public to be ready for the obstacles they may face.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a $19.6 million (EUR18 million) contribution from the Government of Ireland as part of a multi-year commitment (2024-2027) to support Uganda’s efforts to enhance refugee self-reliance and improve social protection and school feeding in the Karamoja region.

“Supporting Karamoja and refugee communities is central to our mission in Uganda,” said Kevin Colgan, Ireland’s Ambassador to Uganda. “This funding underscores Ireland’s dedication to keeping Karamoja’s children in school, improving food security and livelihoods, and stimulating the local economy.”

The contribution will allow WFP to provide meals to 220,000 schoolchildren in Karamoja by purchasing locally available maize, beans, and oil. It will also help restore degraded land and promote crop diversification in this climate-vulnerable region. Additionally, early warning systems will be enhanced to prepare communities for climate shocks like droughts and floods.

In refugee-hosting districts, over 50,000 refugees will transition from humanitarian aid to self-reliance through livelihood programs. WFP is working with Uganda’s government to promote income-generating activities for both refugees and host communities to ensure food security.

WFP Country Director Abdirahman Meygag expressed gratitude for Ireland’s support, stating, “This contribution is vital in creating pathways to self-reliance and reducing the need for long-term humanitarian assistance in Karamoja and refugee settlements.”

Despite Uganda’s anticipated increase in crop production in 2024, over 400,000 people in Karamoja and 70% of refugee households remain food insecure, according to recent analyses. WFP continues to provide food and cash assistance to 1.4 million refugees in Uganda, prioritizing the most vulnerable.

Ireland’s latest contribution builds on its previous support of EUR11.4 million to WFP from 2020 to 2023.

As the shadows of authoritarianism lengthen across Uganda’s landscape, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s shocking announcement casts a dark spell of inevitability. By pledging allegiance to his father, President Yoweri Museveni, and relinquishing his own presidential ambitions, Muhoozi sets in motion a chain of events that threatens to seal Uganda’s fate.

This dramatic shift raises fundamental questions about Muhoozi’s motivations. His change of heart may be attributed to family dynamics, political calculations, and pressure from the NRM. The move secures Muhoozi’s position within the party and buys time for Museveni to consolidate power. Muhoozi’s loyalty is as surprising as a Kampala traffic jam.

Muhoozi’s statement on corruption pressures Museveni to take action, potentially impeding Rwabogo’s ambition and securing his own position within the NRM. By highlighting corruption, Muhoozi deflects attention from his own controversies while bolstering his reputation as a champion of good governance. This strategic move may also signal a shift in Muhoozi’s strategy to appeal to Uganda’s increasingly disillusioned youth, who demand accountability and reform.

The implications of Muhoozi’s endorsement are far-reaching. Multiparty democracy principles are undermined, exacerbating concerns about Uganda’s democratic trajectory. With over 33 registered political parties, opposition forces face significant marginalization. The Electoral Commission’s effectiveness remains questionable, appointed as it is by the president. Proposed electoral reforms have raised concerns about entrenching the NRM’s grip on power.

Uganda’s politics resembles a perilous boda boda ride, full of unpredictable turns. The electoral landscape mirrors regional trends, where authoritarian regimes maintain power through manipulated democratic processes. Genuine reforms are needed to ensure a level playing field, transparent voting processes, and accountability. Muhoozi’s assertion that no civilian will rule Uganda after Museveni raises profound concerns about military dominance. This declaration undermines civilian governance and the rule of law, potentially paving the way for military intervention in politics. As the delicate balance of power teeters on the brink, the very fabric of Ugandan society is threatened, leaving the Great Lakes region vulnerable to destabilization. Muhoozi’s move adds more pepper to already spicy matooke, intensifying tensions. Uganda’s military must remain apolitical.

The writing is on the wall: Muhoozi’s loyalty is the final nail in the coffin of Uganda’s faltering democracy. As the last vestiges of freedom fade, the nation stands at the precipice, gazing into the abyss of authoritarianism. The once-vibrant dream of self-determination now withers, suffocated by the crushing weight of dynastic ambition.

In this ominous twilight, Uganda’s citizens must confront the existential question: will they surrender to the allure of stability, trading liberty for the false promise of security, or will they rise, fueled by the unyielding spirit of resistance, to reclaim their birthright? The answer hangs in the balance, suspended between the tyranny of silence and the courageous cry for freedom.

Ultimately, Muhoozi’s loyalty announcement masks a sinister reality: a deliberate, well-orchestrated plot to perpetuate authoritarian rule. The stage is set for a Museveni-Muhoozi dynasty, with electoral reforms manipulated to ensure NRM dominance. Uganda’s democratic facade crumbles, revealing a disturbing truth: the country’s future is being dictated by a father-son pact, not the will of the people. Ugandans must resist this blatant attempt to strangle democracy and demand free, fair elections.

Uganda, Africa’s top coffee exporter, saw the value of its coffee exports skyrocket by 82.9% in August compared to the same month last year, driven by soaring global prices. According to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), the country shipped 837,915 bags of coffee, worth $221.6 million, in August 2024.

“The value of coffee exports surged as global prices continue to climb due to dry conditions in Brazil and Vietnam, which are impacting coffee crop yields,” the UCDA reported.

Last August, Uganda exported 743,517 bags, valued at $121.64 million. Over the 12 months leading up to August, the country earned $1.4 billion from coffee exports, marking a sharp increase from $918.4 million in the previous year.

A new study by Remitly has found that Miami remains one of the most desired places to move to, securing the third spot in a global ranking of alternative relocation destinations for another year. Miami surpassed Dubai, which held the top spot last year.

Researchers analyzed Google search data in 98 countries from June 2023 to May 2024 to determine the rankings. By examining the search volume for terms like “move to [city],” and excluding capital cities and the most-searched destinations within each country, they identified Miami as the top choice for 10 countries.

Miami was chosen as the number one relocation destination by residents of Canada, Chile, Grenada, India, Malawi, Myanmar, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Globally, Miami followed Barcelona, which ranked second, and Vancouver, which claimed the top spot with 17 countries selecting it as their preferred alternative relocation city.

The study highlights Miami’s continued global appeal as a relocation hub, driven by its climate, lifestyle, and growing economic opportunities.

Residents of Katunga and Musaana in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, are growing increasingly frustrated over the persistent lack of electricity in their areas, despite neighboring communities being connected. According to Sempa Narris Rwakana, the VHT coordinator for Ruyonza Parish, their communities have been left behind in development due to the absence of power, even as nearby regions benefit from electricity.

For years, locals have petitioned the government to extend electricity to their villages, but their calls have gone unanswered. The lack of power is stalling businesses that rely on it, including welding, salons, popcorn production, and bars.

Former Ruyonza Parish Councilor, Mr. Biryomumisho Pauson Kajere, questioned why many villages were excluded from the Rural Electrification Programme. While some wealthier residents rely on solar power, Kajere stressed that it is not a sustainable long-term solution. He emphasized the need for electricity to boost agricultural value addition and support small-scale businesses.

Kajere also noted that even the areas with electricity face frequent outages, adding to the growing concerns. He called on local Members of Parliament to step up efforts in lobbying for electricity connections to the underserved communities.

Amus College School defender, Toto Majub, has been called up to South Sudan’s U20 provisional squad ahead of the U20 AFCON – CECAFA Qualifiers 2024 in Tanzania. Majub, named among nine defenders, joins a 39-man squad announced by South Sudan U20 head coach Bilal Felix on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Training for the South Sudan U20 team will commence on Monday, September 23, at Juba National Stadium as they gear up for the tournament, which runs from October 6th to 20th. Interestingly, Toto has already linked up with the Uganda Hippos camp at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, as Uganda is also preparing for the same regional qualifiers.

Toto was part of the Uganda U20 squad that played and won 2-1 against Uganda Premier League side Lugazi in a practice match on Saturday. Goals from Alex Yiga and Elvis Ssekajugo secured the win for the Hippos, while Alvin Birungi scored Lugazi’s consolation.

Uganda’s Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija, has praised private financial institutions like Centenary Bank for their continuous support in uplifting economic standards. In a speech delivered by Ramathan Ggoobi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, during the signing of a partnership between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Centenary Bank, Kasaija emphasized the transformative potential of the Shs420 billion (€100 million) loan provided under this deal.

“This investment should not just provide funds, but also foster resilience, creativity, and the potential for individuals to drive economic development,” said Kasaija. He called upon the private sector to leverage this collaboration to break barriers in business development and support a prosperous society.

The loan, which focuses on supporting women entrepreneurs and micro-enterprises, aligns with Uganda’s broader national agenda of economic empowerment. Kasaija underscored the importance of nurturing these groups as a means to improve household incomes and build a stronger economic base.

The EIB partnership marks the largest microfinance loan the bank has ever provided in Africa, with 60% of the funds designated for rural projects outside Kampala, and at least 50% directed toward women-owned businesses. Fabian Kasi, Managing Director of Centenary Bank, highlighted that the partnership has transformed the lives of many, particularly in rural areas, and will continue to support Uganda’s private sector recovery post-COVID-19.

EU Ambassador Jan Sadik commended Centenary Bank’s leadership in providing banking services to rural communities, noting that the institution’s focus on female borrowers and underserved rural clients aligns with EU priorities.

This financial collaboration is expected to significantly boost micro, small, and medium enterprises, driving inclusive growth across Uganda.

Uganda has reported a concerning rise in Mpox cases, with the total doubling in just one week. As of Thursday, the Ministry of Health confirmed 22 cases, up from 11 reported on September 10. Health authorities noted that half of the cases are concentrated in the Kampala Metropolitan area, attributing the spike to overcrowding in the city.

In an update, the Ministry indicated that there have been no fatalities associated with the outbreak. Among the confirmed cases, seven patients have recovered, while 13 are currently in isolation, managing the infectious virus.

Mpox, which can cause symptoms such as a painful rash, fever, and muscle aches, spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals.

As Uganda grapples with this uptick, neighboring South Sudan remains on high alert after reports of the new strain in several surrounding countries, including Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite testing dozens of samples from patients exhibiting similar symptoms, South Sudan has yet to confirm any Mpox cases, with all tests returning negative.

The country’s public health officials are closely monitoring the situation, with support from the U.S. in the form of Mpox testing kits to enhance their response efforts.

In a powerful address at the Africa Youth Forum held during the Summit of the Future in New York, Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt Hon Nabbanja Robinah, emphasized the critical importance of peace and security, calling on world leaders, particularly the United Nations, to prioritize youth affairs for sustainable development.

Prime Minister Nabbanja highlighted that earlier this year, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to the African Youth Charter by establishing a National Steering Committee to oversee its implementation. She underscored that Africa’s youthful population should be viewed as an asset rather than a burden.

The Prime Minister also reiterated President Museveni’s dedication to initiatives that foster economic growth and prosperity across Africa. Daniel Obal, the Special Presidential Envoy on Youth Affairs, urged the UN to take more decisive action to empower youth, who have often been marginalized in development discussions.

The forum featured influential speakers, including Ms. Prudence Ngwenya, Director of Women, Gender, and Youth Affairs at the African Union Commission, and Ahuuna Eziakonwa, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa, among others. The meeting was attended by notable dignitaries, including Uganda’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Gen Jjeje Odongo Abubakar and Deputy Hon Okello Oryem, reinforcing Uganda’s commitment to prioritizing youth involvement for a sustainable future.

Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has declared that no civilian will lead Uganda after his father, long-time President Yoweri Museveni. In a statement on Saturday, Muhoozi emphasized that the country’s security forces will ensure the next leader emerges from the military or police, ruling out a civilian presidency.

“No civilian will lead Uganda after President Museveni. The security forces will not allow it. The next leader will be a soldier or policeman,” Muhoozi announced on X (formerly Twitter).

This statement follows his earlier public expressions of interest in succeeding his father as Uganda’s president. In January 2023, Muhoozi confidently stated his intention to one day lead the country, claiming, “Fortune favours the sons of God! I will be President of Uganda one day.”

Muhoozi has consistently voiced his ambition to take over the presidency, even stating that becoming president would be the best way to honour his mother. His declarations, often shared on social media, have repeatedly challenged Uganda’s opposition, particularly Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine. Muhoozi has previously dismissed the idea of the opposition ever taking power, asserting his popularity over them.

Despite his bold proclamations, President Museveni has distanced himself from publicly endorsing his son as his successor. In a 2022 interview with Kenya’s KTN News, Museveni noted that the ruling National Resistance Movement would determine his successor, and he would support whoever the party chooses.

Ugandans will head to the polls in 2026, as President Museveni, in power since 1986, nears the end of his current term.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s successful ageing to 80 years can be equated to Morgan, who was proved to be a nonagenarian powerhouse who had someway 165 pounds, composed of about 80% muscle and a body of 15% fat and body composition that is healthy according to Philip Jakeman, a professor of healthy ageing in Ireland. 

A nonagenarian is a person who is from 90 to 99 years which we wish our Fountain of Honour to clinch some years to come. Studies have shown that working out two to four times beyond the minimum vigorous physical activity recommendations leads to a lower risk of death. We saw our President during the COVID lockdown doing exercises to build disease resistance and immunity.  

Studies have also shown that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not start with his determination in 1968 to change his community from Nomadism to modern farming, then his enduring legacy of struggle to liberate Uganda and Africa as a whole is enough reward for his graceful ageing. 

Studies have also shown that married men and women live longer because they eat better and are less likely to smoke and drink excessively. His servanthood of serving others and validating everyone.

Recently after his address to the Private sector  CEO retreat, he called out Prof. Ogenga Latigo, one of the FDC’s strongest leaders for a chat. The President told his aide to get his details. This is a comprehensive character of General Museveni who doesn’t allow politics to limit his boundaries to embrace everyone. This corrupts God to grant him more health.

His direct approach of reaching out directly to the youths of Uganda using his Office of the National Chairman headed by Hajjat Hadijjah Namyalo lifts his spirits high, when he empowers disadvantaged youths from ghettos with self-empowerment tools to create wealth and chase poverty is self-rewarding.

Namyalo’s staff alone at ONC are enough to always sing for him uplifting hyms to energise him to serve Ugandans further. So he is investing in people, listening and valuing humanity. This has made him strong and coordinated.

A coalition of prominent global health organizations has come together to tackle a critical issue in anaesthesia safety: the absence of capnography in low-resource environments. During the ALL-Africa Anaesthesia Congress, groups including Lifebox, Smile Train, the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), and the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA) signed an action letter advocating for the recognition of capnography as essential monitoring equipment in anaesthesia guidelines.

Capnography, which measures carbon dioxide levels in exhaled breath, is crucial for preventing complications and fatalities related to anaesthesia. Despite its widespread implementation in high-income countries, access to capnography remains limited in many low-resource settings, endangering countless patients.

The coalition’s letter calls on the World Health Organization (WHO) and national decision-makers to take immediate action to promote the use of capnography. This includes elevating its status in WHO guidelines, integrating it into the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, and recognizing it as essential equipment in national anaesthesia protocols.

Dr. Elizabeth Igaga, Director of Programs Safety at Smile Train, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Incorporating capnography as essential monitoring equipment is vital for enhancing patient safety during surgery. By advocating for its inclusion in anaesthesia guidelines, we aim to set a new standard for safer surgical care, ensuring that every patient has access to life-saving technology.”

Capnography has been a standard practice in operating rooms in high-income countries for over 30 years, significantly reducing anaesthesia-related complications since its introduction in the U.S. in 1991. However, research indicates a stark gap in its availability in low-resource settings, with many countries lacking this critical tool entirely.

Dr. Tihitena Negussie, Global Clinical Director of Lifebox, stated, “A capnograph is not just a tool—it’s an essential one. By integrating capnography into standard anaesthesia practices worldwide, especially in low-resource settings, we can prevent numerous avoidable complications and save lives. This coalition and the signing of this action letter mark a pivotal moment in our shared mission to enhance surgical safety.”

The action letter emphasizes the need for WHO and national authorities to prioritize capnography, reinforcing its role in safeguarding patients and empowering anaesthesiologists to deliver optimal care in any context.

Professor Daniela Filipescu, President of the WFSA, expressed the organization’s commitment to advancing anaesthesia safety globally: “Upgrading capnography’s status in global guidelines is essential for protecting patients and enabling anaesthesiologists to provide the highest level of care.”

The signing event saw participation from health ministries, professional societies, hospitals, and individual anaesthesiologists from across Africa and beyond, reflecting a unified effort to promote safer anaesthesia practices and improve health outcomes in resource-limited settings.

Professor Sean Chetty, President of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists, noted, “As anaesthesiologists, our primary responsibility is patient safety. The widespread adoption of capnography in low-resource settings will bring us closer to a reality where safe anaesthesia is accessible to all. Today’s agreement is a crucial step toward making this life-saving tool available where it is needed most.”

To address the challenges posed by the high cost and scarcity of capnography devices, Smile Train and Lifebox have developed the Smile Train-Lifebox Capnograph—an affordable, durable solution designed specifically for low-resource settings. The initiative also includes a comprehensive training package for anaesthesia providers.

The coalition’s efforts represent a significant advancement in ensuring safer anaesthesia practices and enhancing health outcomes in low-resource environments. Through their advocacy for the widespread adoption of capnography, these organizations aim to create a future where safe anaesthesia is a reality for everyone.

The Ugandan military announced on Friday that it is initiating an investigation into a helicopter crash that occurred in Somalia, where all four peacekeepers aboard survived the incident.

Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the Ugandan military, informed The Telegraph via telephone that the inquiry aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash of the military transport helicopter, which went down shortly after departing from Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, on Thursday evening.

The helicopter was en route from Mogadishu to Belidoogle airfield, located approximately 90 kilometers northwest of the capital.

Kulayigye confirmed that the aircraft made a crash landing but that all individuals on board are safe. “Whenever there is an air accident, an investigation is necessary,” he stated.

Details regarding the cause of the crash—whether due to technical malfunction or hostile action—have not been disclosed, and both the Somali National Army (SNA) and ATMIS have yet to comment officially on the incident.

The helicopter was en route from Mogadishu to Ballidogle airfield, located approximately 90 kilometers southwest of the capital, where U.S. forces and Somali commandos known as Danab are based. All individuals aboard were reportedly rescued following the crash.

Uganda is among the countries contributing troops to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia.

In a vibrant and lavish event at the Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo, Kamuntu Frank, media coordinator for the Office of the National Chairman, graduated with a Second Class Upper Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Media Studies from Victoria University. Kamuntu shared his plans to pursue a Master’s Degree at Victoria University, inspired by a lecturer’s advice to never settle for less. Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

The graduation ceremony saw the attendance of high-profile guests including Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and Hon. Persis Namuganza, among others. A total of 692 male and 778 female students graduated, with 129 earning Master’s Degrees, 506 Bachelors, 141 Diplomas, and 694 Certificates.

Scientists from the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) have initiated a two-year study to develop a vaccine targeting Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a zoonotic disease that affects both humans and animals. The global threat posed by CCHF puts nearly three billion people at risk, yet no licensed vaccine or antiviral treatment currently exists.

The project, launched on Wednesday at Lake Victoria Hotel in Entebbe, is backed by £2 million (over 9 billion UGX) from the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care. Prof. Moffat Nyirenda, director of MRC, emphasized that the study aims to bolster global health security by enhancing preparedness for emerging infectious diseases.

“The study will strengthen ongoing collaborative efforts to optimize the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment,” Nyirenda said, noting the urgency of tackling this potentially deadly virus.

Leading the research, Asst. Prof. Sheila Balinda, the study’s principal investigator, explained that the vaccine would target infections in both humans and animals, reducing mortality rates, preventing outbreaks, and easing the burden on healthcare systems. Balinda’s team has already identified a viral carrier from chimpanzees and begun developing a vector for the CCHF vaccine. The next phase includes testing the vaccine on animals like monkeys and mice, followed by trials on humans.

UVRI director, Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu, highlighted the importance of this research, stating that CCHF has a mortality rate of between 10% and 40%. Transmitted through ticks or direct contact with infected animals and humans, the disease remains a serious public health threat.

“We have laid a solid foundation with previous clinical trials, which will guide us in developing and testing future vaccines. The success of this trial is crucial for global health,” Kaleebu said.

The research uses a chimpanzee adenovirus platform, originally developed during Uganda’s COVID-19 vaccine efforts. This open system has the potential for broader use in developing vaccines for other infectious diseases.

Key stakeholders from the MRC, UVRI, and other institutions, including policy makers and public health officials, attended the launch event. Dr. Charles Ayume, chair of the Parliamentary Forum on Antimicrobial Resistance, stressed the need for continued dialogue between scientists and policymakers to drive the necessary actions in support of the study.

This collaborative effort includes partners from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Makerere University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Institute of Primate Research in Kenya.

Maj Gen Henry Masiko, Chairperson of the Field Inspection Project at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA), has urged civil servants, especially engineers, architects, and planners, to prioritize high-quality work in government projects.

“If you want to earn the public’s trust, deliver work that the government can rely on,” Maj Gen Masiko emphasized during an inspection of Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineers Brigade projects in the Central Region.

Assumpta Nakalema has been awarded the grand prize of Shs50 million for her solar-powered egg incubator at the third edition of the AYuTe Africa Challenge-Uganda. The event highlights the innovative spirit of young entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.

Angel Uwera secured the first runner-up position and a prize of Shs25 million for her rapid soil testing machine, the “MAK Agrometer.” Meanwhile, Olivia Nakiwanuka took home Shs10 million for her project, Axis Solar, finishing as the second runner-up.

Organized by Heifer International Uganda, the AYuTe Africa Challenge aims to empower young innovators and revolutionize agriculture. Since its launch in 2021, it has become instrumental in promoting pro-poor value chains, youth empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

This year’s competition saw a record 261 submissions, including 83 from female innovators. The range of innovations showcased, from automated irrigation systems to pest detection devices, underscores the transformative potential of youth in agriculture.

William Matovu, Country Director for Heifer International Uganda, praised the creativity of the participants: “Young innovators have immense potential to drive significant change in agriculture. This year’s innovations truly embody the energy and creativity of our youth.”

In remarks delivered by Dr. Ronald Gyagenda Ssegawa, Bright Rwamirama, the Minister of State for Animal Industry, stressed the need for collaboration to advance agricultural development. “Transforming agriculture requires the collective efforts of governments, private sector partners, and organizations like Heifer International.”

To enhance female participation, the challenge included two additional slots for women innovators. Stella Nakirijja and Patricia Ninsiima each won Shs3.5 million for their projects—a solar-powered tick detector and grain-preserving nanotechnology, respectively.

Since its inception, the AYuTe Africa Challenge has engaged 704 young talents, including 158 female innovators. This year, the top ten finalists were each awarded Shs2 million in recognition of their contributions to agricultural innovation.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance, has announced an initiative to investigate telecommunications companies regarding the ongoing use of unregistered mobile phone SIM cards, a practice linked to increasing instances of fraud and crime. This move follows concerns raised by Hon. Sarah Ameede, the woman MP for Butebo district, who reported that local residents have been targeted by fraudsters using these unregistered numbers for extortion.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) had previously mandated the mass registration of SIM cards in 2013 to address crime concerns. However, Minister Baryomunsi expressed dissatisfaction with the assurances provided by telecom companies, which claim that only registered numbers are in use. He noted, “I will engage with the telecommunications companies again, as evidence shows that unregistered numbers are still accessible.”

During a parliamentary session on September 19, 2024, Ameede recounted troubling incidents in her district where individuals impersonating agents of a war victims’ association exploited residents by promising government compensation in exchange for money. She called for government action to eradicate these fraudulent activities.

Supporting Baryomunsi’s call for accountability, Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Jacob Marksons Oboth, proposed that the Uganda Communications Act be reviewed to introduce penalties for telecom companies found distributing unregistered SIM cards. He emphasized the security threats posed by such practices, pointing out that criminals often use these untraceable numbers to coordinate illicit activities.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa endorsed the suggestion for punitive measures, drawing parallels with financial institutions that incur significant fines for facilitating money laundering. Lawmakers echoed these sentiments, sharing personal experiences with fraud related to unregistered SIM cards.

Hon. Andrew Ojok (NRM, Omoro County) proposed launching a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens about identifying fraudulent schemes, underscoring the need for a comprehensive strategy to tackle this urgent issue.

In a move to enhance connectivity across Africa, Uganda Airlines has launched a new flight route to Abuja, Nigeria, increasing its total destinations to over 20. This follows the successful introduction of services to Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria, just a year prior.

The inaugural flight to Abuja took off from Entebbe on September 12 at 4 PM, landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 6:15 PM. Uganda Airlines will operate the route with its flagship Airbus A330-800neo aircraft, with flights scheduled for Thursdays and Sundays, connecting Abuja to Lagos.

At the launch event, CEO Jenifer Bamutaraki expressed enthusiasm for the new service, stating, “We are excited to introduce flights to Abuja, marking our second destination in Nigeria after Lagos. This achievement reflects our commitment to enhancing travel between Uganda and Nigeria.”

Bamutaraki noted that Abuja is now the 14th destination in the Uganda Airlines network, underscoring the airline’s mission to improve air travel across Africa. “The launch of this route highlights our dedication to providing reliable and affordable air services that promote business, tourism, and leisure travel,” she added.

The new Abuja service addresses the connectivity gap between Nigeria’s administrative capital and East Africa, allowing travelers from central, northern, and northeastern Nigeria to easily connect to various destinations, including Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Mumbai, and Dubai.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the state minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Fehintola Adebowale Oyeyemi, and the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, Fred Bamwesigye.

This week, the African Union (AU) announced a significant boost to peace efforts across the continent, allocating $7 million to regions heavily impacted by conflict and instability. This funding aims to support critical initiatives in Sudan and South Sudan, including backing the transition process in Juba and facilitating Khartoum’s peace process through political dialogue, cessation of hostilities, and potential AU-led monitoring and verification missions.

The AU highlighted that a portion of the funds will bolster the Southern Africa Development Community’s mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and reinforce stabilization efforts in the Lake Chad Basin, addressing ongoing violence that disrupts stability and livelihoods in these conflict hotspots.

Additional funds will aid stabilization initiatives in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger within the Sahel region, as well as support national reconciliation and dialogue efforts in Libya and Mozambique’s actions to pacify Cabo Delgado.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, over 10 million people have been displaced, with 2 million fleeing to neighboring countries as refugees, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha). The conflict in South Sudan, ongoing since December 2013, has similarly affected over 10 million people, leading to one of the region’s largest refugee crises.

The AU’s response to persistent conflicts in Congo, Mozambique, and the Sahel has resulted in millions of refugees and internally displaced persons, marking a vital step toward fostering peace and stability across Africa.

The $7 million allocation, sourced from the AU Peace Fund, represents 70% of the approved Crisis Reserve Facility ceiling for 2024. Dagmawit Moges, director of the AU Peace Fund Secretariat, described the disbursement as a significant milestone in strengthening the AU’s capacity to tackle peace and security challenges.

Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, confirmed that the funds were allocated in response to requests aligned with the AU Peace and Security Council’s priorities. In 2023, the Peace Fund disbursed $6.5 million for similar initiatives.

As a key financing mechanism for the AU’s peace and security mandate, the Peace Fund plays an essential role in enabling timely interventions that foster peaceful, stable, and prosperous communities across Africa. The AU aims to enhance the Fund’s impact by mobilizing resources and forging strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.

Hon. Matia Kasaija, Uganda’s Minister of Finance, highlighted the pivotal role of tourism in the country’s Vision 2040 during the 2nd Annual Tourism Development Programme Review Conference in Kampala, themed “Tourism and Peace.” He emphasized that the sector is key to Uganda’s economic transformation, backed by a public investment of approximately Shs2.9 trillion from FY 2020/21 to 2024/25.

Kasaija reported a remarkable recovery in international tourist arrivals, with a return of 82.6% of pre-pandemic numbers, totaling 1,274,210 visitors by the end of 2023—up from 814,508 in 2022. Compliance with national and international service standards has also improved, rising from 34% to 55%. Furthermore, international tourism receipts soared by 48%, climbing from Shs2.57 trillion in 2022 to Shs3.819 trillion in 2023.

Minister for Tourism, Hon. Tom Butime, credited the increase in tourist numbers to enhanced promotional efforts and new flight routes introduced by Uganda Airlines, alongside the expansion of Entebbe International Airport. He emphasized ongoing conservation efforts across 22 wildlife protected areas and 30 sanctuaries, aimed at minimizing human-wildlife conflicts.

Both ministers underscored the importance of diverse tourism products and customer satisfaction, ensuring tourist safety through technology and insurance. The Tourism Development Programme is set to promote domestic and inbound tourism, enhance infrastructure, and develop skilled personnel in the tourism value chain, ultimately aiming for annual export earnings of US$50 billion.

Doreen Katusiime, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism, noted that the conference serves as a crucial platform to showcase progress in the tourism sector’s recovery, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the government, private sector, and civil society.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has voiced concerns about the increasingly demanding football schedules, warning that they could harm the future of the sport. In an interview with the BBC, Motsepe highlighted the risks excessive match loads pose to players’ health and the integrity of the game, echoing concerns raised by top footballers like Rodri, who has hinted at the possibility of a player strike due to overwork.

The expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 is a particular concern. The tournament, which used to involve just two matches, will now require teams to play up to seven games over a month. “We don’t want players taking on more than they should—it’s not good for football or its long-term success,” Motsepe said, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to protect players’ well-being.

Motsepe underscored the importance of continuous dialogue among stakeholders, adding, “Solutions will be found that prioritize the interests of all involved.” During his recent trip to London, Motsepe secured financial backing from Saudi Arabia to host the African Super Cup, part of broader partnerships aimed at making CAF financially sustainable.

On 27 September, Riyadh will host a landmark match between Al Ahly and Zamalek, two African football powerhouses, with tickets selling out in record time. Motsepe sees Saudi Arabia’s involvement as key to CAF’s financial future, stating, “It’s important that these resources are used appropriately.” Since his tenure began in 2021, CAF has significantly reduced its debt, from $40-50 million to under $10 million, thanks to new sponsors, increased television rights, and Saudi investments.

Motsepe is also committed to maintaining transparency and integrity within CAF. A probe is currently underway into allegations of misconduct by CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba. “It’s vital that the investigation remains independent and credible,” Motsepe told Telegraph on Friday.

Recently, Motsepe announced that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, marking the tournament’s return to East Africa for the first time in over four decades. Despite Kenya’s current lack of compliant stadiums, Motsepe expressed confidence in the region’s leaders and their commitment to delivering on infrastructure promises.

The African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place from 1-28 February, will be an important test of the region’s preparedness as all three nations work to ensure they’re ready for AFCON 2027.

Donozio Kahonda, MP for Ruhinda South and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, has called on the government to expedite the rollout of digital number plates to help reduce crime in Uganda. In a September 20, 2024, interview at Parliament, Kahonda highlighted the potential of these plates, which were introduced in November 2023, to aid in tracking and identifying vehicles involved in criminal activities.

“These digital plates are part of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) project, designed to improve vehicle identification and tackle crimes like theft and carjacking,” Kahonda said.

Equipped with Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) chips and QR codes, the digital plates are difficult to forge, allowing real-time vehicle tracking and aiding in crime prevention and the recovery of stolen vehicles.

Kahonda’s appeal aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance security through technology. The government has already signed a long-term agreement with a Russian tech firm to implement the system nationwide, marking a significant step in modernizing Uganda’s vehicle registration process and boosting public safety.

Axian Telecom is reportedly set to acquire a 99.63% stake in Wananchi Group, a leading provider of mobile, internet, and TV services in East Africa. The deal was revealed in filings submitted to the Comesa Competition Commission, as reported by The Standard.

Wananchi Group, which operates under the Zuku brand, offers broadband, TV, and mobile services across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, and Zambia. Axian Telecom’s subsidiary, Axian Telecom Fibre, is leading the acquisition efforts.

As part of the transaction, Wananchi Group has agreed to sell its majority stake in iSAT Africa to meet regulatory conditions set by Comesa.

Wananchi has faced challenges in recent years, with shareholder disputes hindering investments and product development. In 2018, some shareholders accused rivals of defrauding them of KES20 billion (US$155 million).

Founded in 1998, Wananchi received a US$40 million investment from a consortium, including Helios Investment Partners, Altice, and Liberty Global, in 2014. The acquisition by Axian Telecom signals a new chapter for the struggling telecom company.

Zoho, a global leader in cloud-based business tools, has teamed up with Bridge International Academies, a prominent education provider in Africa, to improve education access for underserved communities in Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda.

The partnership, announced at the Zoholics Lagos event, will support over 1,500 Bridge schools that serve low-income areas, enhancing the quality and efficiency of education through data-driven solutions.

Bridge will integrate Zoho’s suite of cloud tools—like Zoho Workplace, CRM, and Zoho Desk—to streamline operations, improve communication between parents, teachers, and administrators, and manage student data more effectively. The use of Zoho Analytics will help track attendance, monitor student progress, and refine teaching methods, ultimately aiming to boost educational outcomes.

As part of its social responsibility commitment, Zoho will sponsor uniforms, shoes, and tuition for 200 underprivileged students starting in late 2024. It also plans to distribute eco-friendly school bags made from repurposed materials, supporting sustainability in the region.

Kehinde Ogundare, Zoho’s Nigeria Country Head, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, highlighting Zoho’s commitment to empowering organizations like Bridge with customizable tools that address unique educational needs.
